Winning in Emerging Markets: A Road Map for Strategy and Execution, by Tarun Khanna, Krishna G. Palepu

Already cited by the Financial Times, Forbes.com, The Economic Times, WSJ/Mint and several other prominent global business publications, Winning in Emerging Markets is quickly becoming the go-to book for mapping a strategy for entering new markets—and then quickly gaining a competitive edge in those high growth regions.

Advancing the discussion about emerging markets themselves and how organizations can best leverage the potential of these regions, Tarun Khanna and Krishna Palepu – both well respected thinkers on the subject – argue there is more to sizing up these markets than just evaluating data points related to size, population, and growth potential. In fact, they say the possibility to expand a company’s progress in developing economies is to first asses the area’s lack of institutional infrastructure—and then to formulate strategies around what the authors call “institutional voids” to the firm’s advantage. Khanna and Palepu say the primary exploitable characteristic of an emerging market are such voids, and though they create challenges, they also provide major opportunity both for multinationals and local contenders.

Winning in Emerging Markets serves as a playbook for measuring a market’s potential and for crafting a strategy to succeed there.

Chapter 1

Introduction

The world is focused on emerging markets. The liberalization, growth, and globalization of these still-nascent economies have made them tremendous sources of interest, opportunity, and anxiety over the past 20 years. For households, emerging markets are the source of countless cheap consumer goods. For frustrated computer users, they are often the location of outsourced technical support. For executives of multinationals, emerging markets are growth drivers amid stagnation and financial crisis in developed economies—and the home turfs of powerful new corporate competitors. In the first six months of 2009, the FTSE emerging markets index was up 41.1% while the FTSE All World developed markets index was up 7.2%, as the developed world struggled to recover from financial crisis. For companies drowning in the financial crisis, institutions in these markets have offered life preservers of capital. For upstart entrepreneurs and well-established companies alike, emerging markets are testing grounds and incubators for new innovation. For entrepreneurs, business leaders, and citizens in emerging markets, this newfound global standing is a great source of pride.
For some workers in the developed world, these markets are a source of job security angst. This anxiety has only increased in the wake of the financial crisis and recession in developed markets. For others—such as Wall Street investment bankers displaced by the U.S. financial crisis—they can be havens of new job opportunities. For new university graduates and young professionals in emerging markets, this growth has created tremendous opportunities and recalibrated career aspirations.
For politicians and pundits in the developed world, emerging economies are both derided as the destinations of offshored jobs and pitched as prospective customers for vaunted innovative products and green technologies of the future. For national treasuries in the developed world, emerging market savings have helped finance government deficits. For politicians from all over the world, emerging markets are featuring prominently on global trade and multilateral agendas. For environmental and labor rights activists, the rapid industrialization and undeveloped safeguards in these economies are cause for serious concern.
In a small but telling sign of a growing perception that emerging markets were both important and distinctive, The Economist began including a page of emerging market economic and financial indicators at the back of each weekly issue in 1994. The rationale for the feature, the editors noted, rested on a simple premise: “Rich industrial countries dominate the world economy rather less than they used to.” In 2007, The Economist discontinued the feature, lumping the world’s major economies together in a single table of indicators. Whether the change was made for substantive reasons or simply to save space, the place of emerging markets in the global economy changed dramatically in that 13-year period.
Consider a few items that appeared in that 1994 issue of The Economist in which the emerging market indicators debuted. The magazine’s summary of the week’s news included a capsule noting the enactment of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), linking emerging market Mexico more closely with its more developed northern neighbors, the United States and Canada. One article forecasted that “India will be a power in its own neighbourhood but its frail economy and its physical isolation between the Himalayas and the sea will almost certainly keep it out of the global competition” to be among the world’s preeminent powers. A two-page advertisement touted companies from Taiwan, noting that, “Many of the computers crunching numbers and making their reputations on Wall Street are made in Taiwan. That’s right, Taiwan.”
Since then, agreements similar to NAFTA have dismantled trade barriers in many emerging markets. India’s economy has boomed, in part by leveraging global communications technology that renders moot many of the challenges of its “physical isolation.” The promotional advertisement rebutting the incredulity that Taiwan could produce sophisticated computers is almost laughable today: four out of every five personal computers now produced by contracted manufacturers are made by Taiwan-based firms.
What is an emerging market?
As economic globalization has brought down trade and investment barriers and connected far-flung countries in integrated global supply chains—and emerging markets seem to be converging with the world’s “rich industrial countries”—distinguishing these economies from developed markets may seem to matter less than before. We disagree. One fundamental premise of this book is that businesses still need to distinguish emerging markets—collectively from developed markets and individually from each other.
But, what, really, is an emerging market? The term “emerging markets” was coined by economists at the International Finance Corporation (IFC) in 1981, when the group was promoting the first mutual fund investing in developing countries. Since then, references to emerging markets have become ubiquitous in the media, foreign policy and trade debates, investment fund prospectuses, and multinationals’ annual reports, but definitions of the term vary widely (see Figure 1-1).
The term is often reduced to the unhelpful tautology that emerging markets are “emerging” because they have not “emerged.” To understand emerging markets, we need to consider carefully the ways in which they are “emerging” and the extent to which they are genuine “markets.”
Ask a conference room full of business executives how they would distinguish emerging markets from developed economies, and variants of three different stories will likely arise. Emerging markets such as Brazil, China, India, and Russia, some will certainly say, are emerging by virtue of their fast recent economic growth. The opening of these large economies to global capital, technology, and talent over the past two decades has fundamentally changed their economic and business environments. As a result, the GDP growth rates of these countries have dramatically outpaced those of more developed economies, lifting millions out of poverty and creating new middle classes—and vast new markets for consumer products and services. Large, low-cost, and increasingly educated labor pools, meanwhile, give these markets tremendous competitive advantage in production, and information technology is enabling companies to exploit labor in these markets in unique ways.
Some executives will focus on emerging markets as emerging competitors. On the macro level, a landmark Goldman Sachs report published in 2003 forecasted that the economies of Brazil, China, India, and Russia could grow to be collectively larger than the G6 economies (United States, Japan, United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Italy) in U.S. dollar terms before the middle of the 21st century. Commentator Fareed Zakaria sees this “rise of the rest” as a transformative, tectonic shift in the distribution of global power. Companies based in these economies, meanwhile, are already challenging multinationals based in the developed world—and not only in their home emerging markets. China-based Lenovo’s purchase of IBM’s personal computer business in 2004 and the acquisition of Jaguar and Land Rover by India’s Tata Motors in 2008 are just two examples of the increasing global mergers and acquisitions activity by emerging market-based firms. Some see the financial crisis of 2008-09 as possibly an inflection point, accelerating the emergence of these markets as dominant players in the global economy.
A deeper discussion might elicit a list of the persistent headaches of doing business in emerging markets. These markets, the executives might say, are prone to financial crises. Intellectual property rights are insecure. Navigating government bureaucracies can be thorny. Product quality is unreliable. Local talent to staff operations is inadequate. Reliably assessing customer credit is difficult. Overcoming impediments to distribution can be frustrating. Sorting through investment opportunities or performing due diligence on potential partners is often a guessing game. Others might throw up their hands and say corruption is so endemic in emerging markets that the risks simply outweigh the potential rewards.
Based on many of these signs of emergence, some might say, emerging markets are not distinctly different from other markets; they are simply starting from a lower base and rapidly catching up. Indicators such as the growing numbers of emerging market-based companies listed on the New York Stock Exchange or the growing ranks of billionaires from emerging markets listed annually by Forbes illustrate this catch-up. Behind those indicators, however, is a more complicated story of why firms based in these economies have sought out overseas listings and how those moguls amassed such fortunes in developing countries which are, by many standards, still quite poor.
All of these criteria—the indicators of opportunity and the causes for complaint—are important features of many emerging markets, but they do not delineate the underlying characteristics that predispose an economy to be emerging, nor are they particularly helpful for businesses to address the consequences of emerging market conditions. We see these features of emerging markets as symptoms of underlying market structures that share common, important, and persistent differences from developed economies.
A fundamental premise of our work is that emerging markets reflect those transactional arenas where buyers and sellers are not easily or efficiently able to come together. Ideally, every economy would provide a range of institutions to facilitate the functioning of markets, but developing countries fall short in a number of ways. These institutional voids make a market “emerging” and are a prime source of higher transaction costs and operating challenges in these markets. By relying on outcome criteria to assess markets, managers often overlook the ways in which emerging markets operate differently than developed economies. Ranking the world’s economies by per capita gross domestic product would suggest that the United Arab Emirates, for example, is among the world’s most developed economies, but it is an emerging market nonetheless because of its market structure.
Intuitively, managers know that operating a business in an emerging market is different than in a developed economy. It is tempting to chalk up these differences simply to country context. Indeed, market structures are the products of idiosyncratic historical, political, legal, economic, and cultural forces within any country. All emerging markets feature institutional voids, however, though the particular combination and severity of these voids varies from market to market.
An Actionable Framework
The chapters in this book identify how the uniqueness of emerging markets is shaping the business opportunities and challenges in these economies. We offer a simple and actionable framework to help managers map the institutional context of any emerging market. By developing a granular understanding of the underlying market structure of emerging economies—not just cataloging symptoms to be incorporated in an overall risk assessment—companies can tailor their strategies and execution in emerging markets to avoid mistakes and out-compete rivals. Familiarity with the framework and toolkits in this book can help organizations address key questions such as:
• In this particular market, what market institutions work and what are the missing institutions?
• What parts of our business model can be adversely affected by these institutional voids?
• How can we build competitive advantage around our ability to navigate institutional voids?
• How can we profit from the structural reality of emerging markets by identifying opportunities to fill voids, serving as market intermediaries?
In part I of this book, we unpack our structural definition of emerging markets by examining the institutional anatomy of these economies. In part II, we apply this framework to the challenges facing different actors managing in these contexts: companies filling voids as intermediaries; multinationals based in developed markets; and domestic companies based in emerging markets, what we call emerging giants.
Companies of different stripes face similar strategic choices as they respond to institutional voids in emerging markets:
Replicate or adapt? Institutional voids reliably challenge the execution of business models in emerging markets. Businesses need to determine the extent to which business models can be replicated in emerging markets or adapted around institutional voids. Multinationals need to weigh the extent to which they can transfer business models cultivated in developed markets to emerging economies rife with institutional voids or how they should adapt. Local companies with global aspirations can learn from the business models of developed market-based multinationals, but can also exploit their local knowledge with models adapted around their intimate understanding of institutional voids in their home markets.
Compete alone or collaborate? Developed market-based multinationals and emerging market-based companies each bring inherent advantages to bear in emerging markets that can serve as strong sources of competitive advantage, but each could also gain from collaboration with other parties. Multinationals bring brands, capital, talent, and other resources to emerging markets and yet their track records in these economies have been mixed. Local knowledge is a particularly valuable asset for firms to navigate institutional voids, and multinationals need to decide if some form of collaboration with a local player makes sense for their business. Sharing is a two-way street in such collaborations, however, and multinationals need to weigh the benefits of local knowledge against the risk of empowering a partner which could turn into a well-trained and well-informed competitor. Local companies can exploit their inherent advantage navigating institutional voids as a source of competitive advantage vis--vis incoming multinationals, but these firms can gain capabilities and credibility through global partnerships.
Accept or attempt to change market context? Businesses operating in emerging markets can take the institutional contexts of these markets as a given or work actively to change them by filling institutional voids. Multinationals based in developed markets can either avoid voids as best they can or strive to fill them in service of their businesses. Given regulatory constraints and other sensitivities, however, it can be difficult for multinationals to fill some voids in emerging markets. Local companies are in some ways better equipped than multinationals to operate amid institutional voids, but they can also exploit their local knowledge to fill voids and create a barrier to entry and expansion by foreign competitors. As we discuss in Chapter 4, changing market context can be an entrepreneurial opportunity in its own right for intermediary-based businesses that fill institutional voids.
Enter, wait, or exit? Based on an assessment of institutional voids, companies need to decide whether to enter and operate in an emerging market, wait and emphasize opportunities elsewhere, or to exit if they are already in the market. Multinationals can bring their global capabilities to bear in an emerging market or say, “Not now,” if the challenges posed by institutional voids are too daunting. The option to wait is relatively easy for multinationals to exercise because they can choose where to compete and have the resources to move to different markets. Though not entering is not an option for local companies based in emerging markets, these firms do have an exit option. Local companies with capabilities unrewarded in their home market contexts can say, “Not here,” and exit their markets early in their corporate histories. This option is difficult for emerging market-based firms to exercise because they often lack the resources needed to go global soon after their founding. Emerging market-based companies operating in different industries might emphasize opportunities elsewhere by waiting to enter a particular industry where institutional voids are more serious obstacles.
Overview
Part I (Chapters 2 and 3) describes the importance of market intermediaries to businesses in all markets and offers a toolkit for companies operating in emerging markets to spot and respond to institutional voids (see Figure 1-2). Part II begins, in Chapter 4, by looking at how companies can see voids as entrepreneurial opportunities and examines the challenges building intermediary-based businesses in emerging markets. Chapters 5 and 6 then discuss how developed market-based multinationals and emerging giants from a wide range of industries, operating in a wide range of contexts, have wrestled with the strategic choices above to compete in emerging markets. Chapter 7 looks at how the institutional contexts of emerging markets shape the globalization journeys of emerging giants. We conclude the book in Chapter 8 by summarizing an agenda for companies to develop and deploy strategies that fit emerging markets.

Good Overview and Checklist Review -
By Loyd Eskildson
Achieving scale economies and rapid growth in emerging markets requires moving beyond the comfort zone of the top segment (innovators, high income) frequented by American producers and getting directly to the large and growing middle class. This requires the ability to live without credit card systems, TV and radio advertising, relatively easy dispute resolution processes, Internet vendors, "Kelly Blue Book" and "Consumer Reports" reviews of products, and/or developed logistics providers, etc. One must decide whether to replicate, partner with, or innovate around these services.

Examples include Brazil, China, and India requiring twice as many procedures to register a business in 2007 vs. the 6 in the U.S. or 2 in Canada and Australia. Constructing a warehouse took about 200 days in developed nations in 2007, vs. 336 in China, 24 in India, and 704 in Russia. Time to enforce a contract was about 406 days in China, 300 in the U.S. 230 in South Korea, 1,420 in India, and 570 in Canada. Another important issue involves government involvement - degree of corruption, strength of family ties, depth of involvement, etc. Also helpful comparisons of what a new home/apartment buyer gets in China vs. U.S.

The authors provide a useful checklist type approach to reviewing key issues that may be problematic in doing business in developing economies.

Get the Harvard Business Review article, because the title of this book is very misleading
By Jackal
Key insight: In emerging markets the infrastructure (e.g. funding, roads) is not so built up so companies need to address this directly to be successful. This probably means that their strategies need to be less focused than is possible in developed markets.

If you need a whole book to be told this message, I can recommend the book to you. You also get some very shallow case studies, supporting the argument. It is basically the authors interviewing a few executives, who corroborate the authors' key insight (above)

The content deserves three stars. The over-promising title, the lack of detailed examples, and taking 200 pages to get the key insight across deserves one star. So all in all a two star book. Instead of buying the book I recommend picking up some of the authors' Harvard Business Review articles. You get the same knowledge for less money and, more importantly, in much fewer pages than 200.

Excellent

It is not easy to establish a strategic starting point in conducting business in E.M. This book covers a lot of ground when it comes to analysing successful companies involved in E.M. and also looks at why companies often fail in these markets. From such cases and also studying the fabric of the specific countries involved, the authors have proposed a rational and accessible tool-kit in allowing you to find a good entry point in these promising markets. This is a must read for anybody who would like to be exposed to the emerging markets.

Well written and explained. I've followed his two week cleanse with great results. I never much cared about heart rate monitors until he explained how important it is to manage your performance. It has helped me reset my personal understanding of my workout effort. Garmin ought to pay him a royalty!

eye opening
By Kindle Customer
I'm someone who has long thought that more is better. And as such I have constantly struggled with plateaus and set backs and feeling like I'm not getting into better shape really -- just grinding myself harder.

E.g. I reduced my time on a (hilly) 6.1 mile course from 1:07 to :49. Yes, lost some weight and all, but really felt like I was on the raggedy edge -- stiff and sore and wondering "how many more of these runs do I have in me?"

Most of my gains came from just having a better idea of how hard to push and when and just getting better at sucking it up.

This book has given me some fresh ideas about how to train in a way that will actually make me healthier and fitter, and not just more of a grinder.

The CW always talks about what Maffetone calls the aerobic zone as the "weight loss zone". Well I was never really overweight, so I wasn't too interested in that.

Maffetone explains that it is much more than that, it is the zone where your aerobic system can actually improve, thus improving your endurance and work capacity.

Having it put in those functional, fitness related terms makes me suddenly willing to work in that zone, and hopefully get the functional gains that I am after.

Also, I really had never had anyone articulate the distinction between fit and healthy. I've been that fit/unhealthy person at times, and just couldn't articulate where I was. He expresses the concept very well.

The issue I have is that I am a big believer in strength training and want to maintain that part of my training. That will be trick to integrate I think, but the concepts he offers here I think make it possible.

So this will obviously require patience to show results. Hopefully I can demonstrate that. The fact that these workouts are not grueling will make that more likely!

just the basics, covered in a basic way
By Denez McAdoo
I'm a video production guy, who's truly never studied graphic design (which, by the way, is what this book is about. No real emphasis on motion graphics, despite the title.) So I wanted a book that covered the basics, and that's what this book does.

However, I was still largely disappointed. I couldn't help but feel that I already knew much of this information already and the author's presentation of if felt as though she had little more then a basic understanding as well. She several time admits that one topic or another is not an area of her expertise (video editing for example, strange in a book title for the Motion Media Artist.) This feeling was not helped by the fact that this is one of those books on design where the authors personal design examples are, frankly, not that great.

This book is also structured so that you are told what your going to learn, you learn it, and then recap what you just learned two pages ago. Also, many chapters end with and "inspirational" story from an artist. This all feels like fluff to me.

Bottom line, if you want just the basics, explained in a truly basic way, this book does that. But if you want any thing more then that, then this book spends too much time on basic subject and too little time on anything advanced.

Excellent text
By Sheila Macd
This book filled in many gaps for me in the workflow and sequence for producing a graphic. It is well laid out, on a good gradient that makes it easy to follow and also provides many helpful resources. I thoroughly recommend it.

A high level survey of multimedia design
By GameMaker
This is a pretty interesting book. What it basically does is devote one chapter to the most common subjects that are relevant to creating multimedia. The topics include: drawing, planning, composition, animation, type, color, video editing, and then what they call "communication" (which talks about how to work with customers).

I think this book is best used in an entry level multimedia type of course. It covers a lot of ground, but everything it covers, is covered in more depth in other books. And I think the lengthy chapter on drawing seems a little silly to me, because I just don't see it helping anybody that wants to improve their drawing skill.

For me, I liked the chapters on composition, type, and color in particular. But I also realize that it wasn't a very thorough treatment of any of those topics.

Mobile Interface Theory, by Jason Farman

Mobile media – from mobile phones to smartphones to netbooks – are transforming our daily lives. We communicate, we locate, we network, we play, and much moreusing our mobile devices. In Mobile Interface Theory, Jason Farman demonstrates how the worldwide adoption of mobile technologies is causing a reexamination of the core ideas about what it means to live our everyday lives. He argues that mobile media’s pervasive computing model, which allows users to connect and interact withthe internetwhile moving across a wide variety of locations, has produced a new sense of selfamong users – a new embodied identity that stems from virtual space and material space regularly enhancing, cooperating or disrupting each other. Exploring a range ofmobile media practices –including mobile maps and GPS technologies, location-aware social networks, urban and alternate reality games that use mobile devices, performance art, and storytelling projects –Farman illustrates how mobile technologies are changing the ways we produce lived, embodied spaces.

Review

"Working deftly at the intersection of poststructuralism and phenomenology, Jason Farman develops the concept of the ‘sensory-inscribed’ body to discuss embodiment through and within mobile interfaces. Enlivened with personal anecdotes, his accessible and theoretically savvy writing provides essential guidance to the effects that mobile media are having on important contemporary issues, from ethical quandaries to geospatial reconfigurations of social relationships." ―N. Katherine Hayles, Professor of Literature, Duke University

"This luminously theorized, beautifully written book provides the first comprehensive account of locative mobile media. Jason Farman offers us a distinctive, philosophically attuned perspective on the great cultural technology of our time―tracing the new relations among bodies, space, and culture." ―Gerard Goggin, Professor of Media and Communications, University of Sydney

"Farman's Mobile Interface Theory is the first [book]that focuses completely on theory for mobile media, and, in doing so, provides an excellent foundation for all of us interested in this area of media scholarship." ―Dene Grigar, Washington State University Vancouver, in Leonardo Reviews

"Farman’s text represents an ambitiously thoughtful and well-written attempt to understand locative media in terms of embodied experience." ―Dan Hassoun, University of Minnesota, in The International Journal of Communication

WINNER OF THE 2012ASSOCIATION OF INTERNET RESEARCHERSBOOK AWARD: "[Mobile Interface Theory] has the potential to inform new scholarship, re-set directions, and remind us that, now, the Internet is not somewhere else, but right here, in our pockets, our minds, our places." ―AoIR Book Award Committee

"Mobile Interfaces in Public Spaces...would work...well as a foundational text in a course on mobile theories...[and] would likely be of interest to those seeking a richer theoretical understanding of how we experience space and time in an increasingly networked world." - Ryan S. Eanes, University of Oregon, USA

Unique, Fascinating and Educational
By David
The mission was to find a book dealing with Mobility and modern trends. The Amazon search engine universe manifested the book "Mobile Interface Theory." This is the very first book I have "rented" for $9.00. The content of the book was both engrossingly interesting and also difficult to follow, due to all the new buzzwords. Is it worth it? Yes! However, be prepared to have your hair blown back with a flash flood of new terms. "Mobile Interface Theory" is an academic book attempting to shed some light on the basic theory behind this new digital mobile revolution, without being hopelessly outdated the minute the book hit the stands.

Cyberculture / Micro-Places / Smart Mobs / Pervasive Computing / Wearable Computing / Mobile Interface Embodiment / Biomapping / Locative Interfaces / Site-Specific Storytelling / Artifact Engaged Interaction / Unpracticed Databases / Digital Tagging / Mobile Media Narrative / Sensory-inscribed / Mobil Urban Markup / Polyvocality / Mobile Media bubbles /....... I need to stop now.

"Mobile Interface Theory" will absolutely deliver on the promise of expanding your mental horizon of this new emerging mobile world. Did I understand everything written in the book? NO, and I have a degree in Philosophy. This is a book that demands to be taken seriously, and read at least twice if not three times. It is challenging not only due to the new words, but also to the fact that it provides a broad overview of mobile media culture at a level that most of us would not experience.

While reading this book, I started to become much more aware of examples of mobile Interfacing, such as the Streetmuseum application. This mobile device application will show you an overlay of a modern photograph with a historical photograph, and I believe uses GPS technology to guide the user in the field. I began to notice photographs of this application being shared on Facebook by friends in England.

The notes of this book are a source of future reading and research. Jason Farman is likely one of the few academic scholars who have attempted to tackle from a philosophical view just what in the world is going on between society and Mobility. Reading this book has changed my perspective when I watch people engage with mobile technology, providing new insight to the driving factors behind this mobile media social revolution.

I will absolutely be reading his future work.

Mobile

Smart study of mobile interface in the avant-garde of the digital world, viewing internet as generative or an authoring tool. Mobile technology is revolutionizing our society in the sense that we can, more and more, match our mobility and take some advantages of this situation. I appreciated very much the analytical property: very sophisticated and up-to-date.

Important Read

Some folks will say "nothing new" or similar - but there is a lot of turf covered here, and the more informed folks should know already. As someone who grabbed after mentioned in an article, I've highlighted a dozen things in the Kindle version with some notes that I need to do now. Of these a few are just housekeeping, but the others are net-new to do. It is a quick read, and reminder list of tasks. Better than several others I have recently read regarding distributions based on taxes vs. age. If you are just starting, or over 50, grab now.

Short, very sweet and on fire
By Joani
A great trilogy. Although the story was short, you were very in tune with these characters. Most stories you don't have enough time to get the feel of the MC's to even care, but with Allen and Tom, you feel them right away. They are both intent on the other and exploring each other to the fullest. I just love them!!

This Book Saved Me from the Siren Song of the 60's
By Mona Clee
Isn't that an odd thing to say about a book whose title starts with the word "sex?"

Well, around 1964 one of my parents brought this book home, although neither of them would ever confess to the deed. Whoever it was, they did me a big favor. When the folks weren't watching, I swiped the book and devoured it in a single long sitting.

Helen Gurley Brown should have entitled this masterwork "All the Hard-Nosed Things that Young Women in the So-Called Pre-Feminist Era Need to Know about Money, Career, Independence, Women's Rights, and The Way Things Unfortunately Are. And Oh Yes, Sex. That." However, the book would undoubtedly have sold fewer copies if the title had truly reflected the contents, so it's just as well they hyped the sex part.

Under the impression that I was going to get to read some really naughty stuff, I studied Brown's book with the intensity I would later reserve for pre-calculus. Brown was the friendly, more experienced adult ("Aunt Helen," I liked to think of her) who cut the BS and told you how it really was with respect to a number of important subjects, often contradicting the messages of the dominant 60's culture, as it materialized later in the decade.

Money? Girl, Woodstock or not, you will need it when you are no longer "pristinely young," so get a career and earn it. You will appreciate the freedom and self-respect it brings you. Do the very best you can with whatever abilities you have and the education you can get, and the rewards will carry you through the inevitable bad times that everybody faces. Beauty? Even if you are gorgeous, don't put all your eggs in that basket, because your beauty will fade, and then where will you be if that's the only card you ever played? Love? It is NOT all you need, no matter what the Beatles say. Marriage? Fine, fabulous (Brown herself has been married over forty years), but don't pin all your reasons for living - or your financial survival -- on a guy. Guys are just fallible human beings. Don't give up your ability to stand on your own two feet when you fall in love, because there are no guarantees in life, ever. As Brown eloquently put it, in middle age (or at any time before) a man can leave a woman "like dishes in the sink" if he wants to badly enough. Exercise and a healthy diet? Essential to self-respect. Property ownership (or at least having a fine apartment)? Also essential, particularly when you get older; living in a garage apartment furnished with orange crates is cute when you're twenty, but pathetic when you're forty.

I came of age in the late 60's and early 70's, when the culture was telling us to tune in, turn on, and drop out. Don't conform, don't join the establishment, don't become the man or the woman in the gray flannel suit, don't throw away your life working and forget to smell the roses. Follow your dreams and the universe will magically provide.

This was good advice as far as it went. It sounded so great, and it really was well meant and idealistic and heartfelt...if only it had been true. Unfortunately, it should have been taken with a small but healthy dose of skepticism. Such as, yes, do follow your dreams, but along the way learn some marketable skills, okay? However, the cultural mindset discouraged us from planning for the future, or thinking seriously about money, financial issues, and practical things. We might have known with our minds that the Woodstock generation would eventually get much, much older, but we didn't believe it.

I, however, had Aunt Helen whispering in my ear, so around age thirty I finally rolled up my sleeves, quit hanging out in Austin drinking dark beer and swimming in Barton Springs, and got an advanced degree and a good job -- but did plan things so I still had some time to smell the roses. I couldn't have done it without her advice. At the end of the day, although Brown was not considered a "real" feminist, and in fact came in for a great deal of scorn on that account, she helped me every bit as much as the rest of them.

She wasn't into rhetoric, ideology, or internecine wars with the sisters, she just gave good hardheaded advice about the way things were, like it or not, that's city hall so just deal with it. She liked men. They were people, they had their problems, but generally they were pretty nice. This was quite a relief to those of us who liked them too, even though there were times when it wasn't politically correct to dwell on it. She just didn't believe that liking men required her to give up everything else worthwhile in life, or her ability to provide for herself.

Yeah yeah, like just about everybody else I take issue with her rather Darwinian attitude about carrying on with married men. However, as the writer Molly Ivins would say, she had the guts to tell young women how the cow ate the cabbage. I honor her for that.

Life changing event
By C. Fey
I bought this book recently just because it is the book I that changed my life. I read it originally when it was first published. I was a recent high school graduate in a steel town culture in Western Pennsylvania. I read it and my whole approach to life changed. I went to collage (first one in my family), became successful in the technology world (only one in my family), ended up in New York city (well I regard this as a benefit). None of these things (as well as all the side effects that came with them) would have happened if I had not read this book. I don't know if it would have that impact on today's teenagers, but I bought it again in 2014 on the occasion of my retirement to see what it could have said to trigger all these events.

a bit dated....
By cindy eley
a bit dated, but entertaining view into the world of women (mad men style) back in the 60's, 70's. surprisingly accurate advice back then about healthy eating and nutrition--that has been since confirmed by science and 50 years of experience.
