Not Your Typical Border-Crossing Story

I loved this book! I am a second language reader in Spanish and really enjoyed the conversations between the characters. The slang was so much fun and even a little challenging at times. Urrea has captured the language and the interactions of teens and has faithfully recreated life in a small Mexican town, Tijuana, and "los Unites." The book took me back to my travels as a young adult in Mexico and to my former students' lives as they tried to negotiate the reality of life on both sides of the border.

I have read this new book a couple of times and will read it again! I love its emphasis on "being" rather than "doing", which is the essence of our whole lives, not just the love-making part, and that is the point of the book. It is a fun and easy read - no fluff, just a concise, thoughtful, and fun narrative, with a reminder that love-making is a joyful journey, not a destination.

A great resource on sexual thought that's also a fiercely daring work of art

Polysexuality is a very valuable source-book for anyone interested in sexual politics. It provides a major sampling of different interpretive approaches to sexuality. The work, while endowed with a table of contents and sections on specific subjects like "Ambiguous Sex," Corporate Sex," and the like, very often presents text in a double column on the page, and in many other forms of textual presentation (intereviews, dialogues, etc). This is because, given the pastiche element of the produced volume, the editor made the paradoxically lucid decision of making the physical text less reader friendly-- not to the point of making it unreadable, however. Since the editors' basic argument is to expose the multifaceted elements of the concept of "sex" (mostly referring to the act of sex), the concessional change in format is meant to reflect the work's content and also articulate the limits of a compendium of this sort: that it can only give a snapshot of the very protean concept of sex itself.

As a resource, I can't praise the work enough. The text provides theory excerpts from major critical thinkers such as Guattari, Deleuze, Bataille, Lyotard, Lacan, and Barthes. It also showcases the work of lesser-known, and in some cases more taboo, theorists such as Guy Hocquenghem, John Preston, and Tony Duvert. The text is not limited strictly to theory and samples the thoughts of fiction writers like Paul Verlaine, Rimbaud, Robbe-Grillet, William Burroughs, and Pierre Guotat. Like the majority of the works published by Semiotext(e), Polysexuality is a collection that is just as enlightening as it is anarchic and transgressive.

Interesting Reading

Disappointed!

Almost everything in this book has been rumored or discussed in every Liberian beer-drinking joint. Nothing new; therefore, to claim that the book is fictional only show the fear of the writer in claiming what every Liberian of age 45+ has heard. Incidentally, there is another book written by a Liberian from the suburbs of Charlotte, NC, claiming to be fictional that follows the same plot. If this author, John Milton Greaves, is actually THE Milt Greaves of the 1970s, then there is even more disappointment. I could gather a group of "drunk" Liberians, document their rumors and innuendos and come up with a similar book.
NOT WORTH THE COST.

This Is Not a Novel!

Mr. Greaves would have better served in his anti-Sirleaf campaign, if he had written a straight political account of his beliefs and left out gross parts. His delivery was very ill advised. He is quick in pointing out others' failings, except is own, I suspect. This makes his work a, very, poorly veiled memoir.

I'm not defending President Sirleaf. I am an outsider living in the comfort of the USA, however, no person deserves to have her character assassinated like this. Mr. Greaves is not a novelist. He seems very angry and vengeful. This a political smear. What the author asserts in the book may or may not be true. But what is obvious, again to the outsider, is that the book was written out of spite and directed towards the current Liberian President Ellen Sirleaf. Plus, it is grossly over priced and poorly edited and written.

I subscribe to the Liberian, Sierra Leone, Ghana, and Nigerian daily news feeds from the AllAfricia online newspaper. Greaves's book, again it is NOT a work of fiction, is meant to inflame, not as fair criticism of the history of Liberia and her sad troubles. This is why I object so vehemently to The Fist of Machiavelli. Now the unemployed and/or the uneducated masses in Liberia might find a champion in Greaves's book, and this is very unfortunate.

Stephen Ellis's book that was first published in 1999 by the New York University Press, The Mask of Anarchy: The Destruction of Liberia and the Religious Dimension of an African Civil War, is a scholarly account of the horrible civil war days. His book was republished in 2006, just at the beginning of President Sirleaf coming to office. Now this book is a must read for anyone interested in the history of Liberia. Greaves's book is meant to inflame, not as fair criticism of the history of Liberia and her sad troubles.

ARE YOU KIDDING?. Just 100 pages of notes from the average introductory counseling course.

You've got to be kidding me. $37.99 for 100 pages of COURSE NOTES. Published by PEARSON, no wonder the price is sy high. Is it ethical to set such a high price on a 100-page summary of what is already presented in the average introductory course on counseling approaches? Ask the authors. The prose varies from disorganization and repetition to undeveloped, obtuse phrases. There are virtually no tools of analysis, only summaries of the schools of thought and some comparison charts.

A must have for students pursuing a career in psychology

Developing Your Theoretical Orientation is a must have book for anyone pursuing a career in mental health. It's easy to read, informative, and has great info in a readily accessible format to help you identify your own worldview which in turn shapes your theoretical orientation. In your coursework, you'll be exposed to modalities that may resonate with you, but if they're not actually compatible with your worldview, you may find yourself leaning elsewhere. This book helps you explore your worldview and then find the orientation(s) which are compatible (to varying degrees) with how you look at things naturally. This way you're not fitting into a mold... you're finding which tools suit you best. And given that you will likely at some point have to write an essay (e.g., for applying for internship!) on your theoretical orientation, knowing this and exploring it is imperative!

Short but sweet. I liked this quick read about step siblings who finally admit their love for each other and over come the differences in their personalities to discover that even though they have different methods of getting there-- they both really do want the same things.

Some hot sex scenes with a happy ending. What else do you need? Oh yeah! A rich, good looking step brother to sweep you off your feet!

too much telling not enough showing

It had a potential to be good but IMO it wasn't. The hero and heroine were interesting. Tanner was a different type of hero. He had no desire to be rich nor having a 9-5 office job. He was an outdoor kind of guy who did not care about material possessions. By contrast Maggie was the opposite. Due to her reaction to her upbringing, in order to feel secure she needed money. She was focused on doing well in school so when she graduated she could get a good job. I liked that Tanner was not a manhoe. While not a virgin he did not sleep around. He spent a lot of his time alone in the wilderness. Maggie was a virgin due to her lack of interest in other men because of her feelings for Tanner.

Unfortunately Maggie and Tanner's relationship was more of an outline than a story, as were their characters. I know that it is harder to do in shorter books but it can be done and it wasn't here. The book was a lot of telling than showing. They both supposedly loved each other forever but I did not feel it. They needed to spent more time together than they did. Too much of the book was spent either with them fighting or ignoring each
other or physically separated. They did not get together until the very end of the book. By that time it is too late for me to care if they got together. I had lost interest.

Also the book was a HFN as opposed to a HEA. Because most of the book they were not a couple and had a contentious relationship, to make it believable that they end up staying together HEA ending with an epilogue in years in the future would be better.

I like this story, but I was sad that there relationship hasn't progressed as far I hope it, I guess if it was meant to be it will be.
