Howard Philips Lovecraft (1890-1937) is probably the most important and influential author of supernatural fiction of the 20th century. True, you're likely to get a more "complete" anthology by purchasing the Library of America collection of HP Lovecraft's work.

But if you're new to Lovecraft, this is a great place to start.

I bought the hardcover edition of this book basically on the phrase "bibiliophile's dream" utilized in one review. Now that I have it, I have to say that's not that far from the truth. It's a really great buy for the price and the gold inlay Cthulhu on the cover is a selling point all it's own. In another review, someone made note of the binding. I'm inclined to agree, it's not spectacular binding - particularly for a book this size (900 pages!). That said, I don't feel like I'm going to break it when I hold it. It's weak and not impressive but I think it'll hold.

Images and heavy, bold text (such as on the inner title page) have all imprinted themselves on the immediate pages surrounding them. In my copy, there's no bleeding or anything like that but it's definitely distracting.

Take it into consideration and decide just what it is you're looking for. HP Veterans might not be too impressed but it's a fine buy and I'm very happy with it.

If you do buy the book, I hope it finds you in good spirits. Then corrupts them. All the best.

Decent Binding of Lovecraft's Major Work

It's a hefty book, and the leather binding has so far held up to my bedside abuse. I was seduced by the promise of illustrations, but they seem to be merely a set of proprietary clip-art stamped onto stories with marginal regard to relevance. A few editorial/typographical misses. Quality paper and typesetting make for easy reading.

I've enjoyed what I've read of the included essay on Lovecraft. It's an enjoyable refresher for HPL fans, and an interesting primer for newcomers. The pages it consumes wouldn't offer much expanded coverage of HPL's oeuvre. In my opinion, most (if not all) of his best tales are included.

I don't regret the purchase. I do regret the general lack of a deluxe edition of Lovecraft's work more suited to the title of this omnibus, e.g. a thick faux-flesh binding a la the Evil Dead commemorative DVD set. Gimmicky, yeah, but what a conversation piece!

The market is ripe for a lovingly crafted edition with relevant placement of the best of Lovecraft artists, annotations in the vein of ST Joshi's work, and definitely a pronunciation and glossary appendix! My vocabulary has expanded since I first read HPL as a teenager, but I'm still tripping on some of his archaisms.

The Amazon price for the hardcover is only slightly more than you'd pay for the softcover at a retail shop. Good deal.

blue prints surgery is a very good review book for surgery .it is just 113 pages which makes it very easy to study and covers the important topics tested in the usmle. has got very good diagrams and tables.not for indepth study, but good source of reveiw for the boards.i recommend this book for anyone preparing for the boards.

High yield concise review for wards and Step 2

I did particularly well on the surgical subcategory of Step 2, and it's owed to this book. Hands down, it's the best, highest-yield 3rd/4th year review for surgical disease - including epidemiology, symptoms, signs, diagnosis, and management. Awesome for review before the big test; also useful for overview of surgical diseases during your clerkship. One small complaint: it costs lots of dollars for about 100 pages.

Not that good.

I used many of the blueprints books during my clincal rotations in medical school. This one was by far the worst one. The information is more of a cursory overview of several topics. There is just not enough scope or detail in this book for it to be useful. I used this book in conjunction with "Surgical Recall" which is an excellent book. I also referred to the "Essential of General Surgery" book on some specific topics such as fluid and electrolyte management that are not well covered in either book.

Perhaps future editions of this book will be better.
