About the Author
Martin Gardner published his first book in 1935. Since then he has published more than 60 books, most of them about mathematics and science, but also philosophy and literature. He has charmed readers of all ages with his mathematical insights and his sense of fun. He has written one novel, The Flight of Peter Fromm and a collection of short stories, The No-Sided Professor. He wrote the popular Mathematical Games column for Scientific American for 25 years. The entire collection of all of Martin Gardner's Scientific American columns, Martin Gardner's Mathematical Games, are available form the MAA, on one CD in a searchable database. This CD contains all 15 of the published books that contained these columns.

Few books are so smart and so easy.

The world is lesser without Martin Gardner in it.

Martin Gardner was a supremely intelligent mathematician with a real talent for explaining complex mathematical problems in a way that lay people could understand.

Gotcha! follows the same lines. It's kind of an odd book, in that the cartoony style is a little dated and it really looks more like a kid's book or a Young Adult book. Make no mistake, it's not, though young adults could certainly benefit and enjoy.

Gardner primarily approaches logical fallacies in this book. He uses the cartoons to walk you through exactly the wrong conclusion, then steps back and brilliantly deconstructs the argument so that you can see where your normal human condition fails you and why the unintuitive answer is the mathematically correct one. That said, he does it in a way that involves minimal math and only a basic understanding of logic and reason.

That's not to say the book is dumb or dumbed down. Nothing could be further from the truth. It tackles some very complex problems and some issues that have confounded mathematicians and logicians for centuries. Some of the problems don't even have an answer, and he even manages to walk you through why we've been unable to answer the question even though the answer seems obvious.

Overall, it's just a delightful book that's easy to read and leaves you much smarter than you were when you started it. There's not many books that can make such a claim.

The Charing Cross Mystery

When I had read all that Conan Doyle had written of Sherlock Holmes I was left with a void in my life. Until I found J.S. Fletcher. His clever plot lines developed in the atmosphere and culture of Victorian England were just what I was looking for. His descriptions of life and characters in rural and small town 19th Century England are heartwarming and accurate. For a few hours, they transport one back to an age that makes our overcomplicated, technologically driven society seem like some hideous future world from the mind of H.G. Wells.

Action packed mystery of 1923

I'm addicted to J. S. Fletcher mysteries, but I'm not as enthusiastic about this one as I have been about all the others I've read. I enjoyed it - but an enormous amount of criminal activity is packed into this novel - murder, blackmail, kidnapping, and theft - almost too much to swallow.

It starts with a hale and hearty-looking gentleman dropping dead without warning in a railway compartment. Murder - as it turns out! The young barrister who witnesses the sudden death gets caught up in the mystery and decides to investigate. It doesn't hurt that the murder victim has an attractive granddaughter willing to join the young man in his investigations.

In the course of the amateur and police investigations that ensue, murder begets more murder and other crimes. There is never a dull moment, with leads being followed up in all directions. The plot is so complicated, that the eventual unraveling of the mystery left me still somewhat confused about what happened. Even the investigators remain mildly confused.

But despite the excessive complexity of the plot, Fletcher's flair for creating quirky and compelling characters still makes for fun reading.

If you're reading all of Fletcher's available mysteries, as I am, might as well read this one. But if you're new to this Golden Age mystery writer, I'd suggest starting with one of his great ones, such as Ravensdene Court, The Middle of Things, The Chestermarke Instinct, The Herapath Property, or The Borough treasurer.

One of my favorites . . .

Every now and again, we may come across an author whose writing style really touches us. And, every now and again, we may come across a story that stirs in us some indescribable, inexplicable, deep emotion within the core of our very soul. I believe I have found that author and that book. Anna Quindlen would be that author, and Object Lessons would be that book.
The first book I had read by Anna Quindlen was Black and Blue, which I had borrowed from my sister. Black and Blue was a highly captivating book because there was a lot going on with the plot of the book, but it was a bit sad at the same time. Black and Blue dealt with an abused woman who ran away with her son, and changed her identity so her husband wouldn't find her. As a result, that book was a bit on the darker side. Object Lessons has a total different feel to it. In this book, it's about an Irish-Italian family named the Scanlan's. This book centers mostly around Tommy Scanlan, and his Italian wife, Connie, and their 12-year-old daughter, Maggie. The couple has three other boys who are mentioned, but only in passing. The other three children are just background characters. Many a time, there's too many characters in a book, and in this case, it's very obvious that Anna Quindlen had an objective to focus on only a few main characters.
Tommy had married Connie when she became pregnant, and his Irish family -- his father, John Scanlan, in particular -- didn't approve. Since then, Connie had felt like an outsider with the other wives, and more than put out by her controlling father-in-law. John Scanlan was one of those larger-than-life characters, as he made a drama about most everything, and felt he had to control his sons, and only daughter, Margaret. Margaret escaped by going into the convent, but Tommy, as well as his brothers, found that John would take control of their lives by putting them in the family business, or buying a house, or sending their children to private school. John had such control over Mark, one of Tommy's brothers, that he prevented him and his wife from adopting children, as Mark had difficulty getting his wife pregnant. John Scanlan even had control over his wife, Mary Frances, making her drift into the background like faded wallpaper. Without much warning, John Scanlan became gravely ill one day when he had a stroke, and the family started changing. Maggie, Tommy's and Connie's daughter (and John Scanlan's favorite grandchild), was going through a tough growing-pain period. She was about to enter her teen years, and she was having a hard time coping with the things that were happening around her. Her relationship with her best friend, Debbie, was changing when Debbie started hanging around other kids who had a negative influence on her. Maggie's parents always seem to be distant or fighting, and now her grandfather was sick and she was seeing how her family was changing. This wonderful story takes you though this family's life, the Scanlan's, in such a realistic and creative way.
One of Anna Quindlen's best talents as a writer is her characterization. This is only the second book I've read of hers (One True Thing is another book I have put aside to read in the future), but I can safely say that her characters are so three-dimensional, and full of depth. They are so human. You don't only get a peek into the minds of her characters, but you also get a glimpse of what is in their hearts. Feelings are what Anna Quindlen is all about. I especially had a kinship with Connie and Maggie Scanlan. I could relate to the feelings of this mother-daughter pair, and I loved getting to know them with such intimacy.
I cannot rave enough about this book, because there are no accurate words to describe how good it really is. To experience it, you would have to read it for yourself.
I do know that this is one of my favorite books, and I do know that Anna Quindlen is one of my favorite authors. She's right up there with other favorites of mine: Connie May Fowler, Pearl Cleage, Alice Hoffman, , and Wally Lamb. Each of these authors are special in his/her own way, and Anna Quindlen has her own voice, and it's a strong one that you can't help but listen to.
Object Lessons was truly an enjoyable experience to read, and it's a book I'm going to have to purchase for myself (since I borrowed it from the library). It's one of those books you would want to go back to for seconds.

Not her best, but not bad either.

Having read One True Thing and Black and Blue, I knew I could rely on Quindlen to teach me new things about myself and my family--that she does, quite well. However, Object Lessons is much more weighed down by direct narrative than the other two books--at times, I found myself wishing the characters would talk to each other and quit thinking so much. I also found Maggie's age implausible--even the most precocious 12 and 13 year olds do not possess her incredible depth.
Connie's relationship with Tommy and subsequent realizations about what marriage is are the most powerful points in the book, and I credit Quindlen with another "perfect" ending--she is one author who does not leave her readers confused or disappointed on the final page.

Powerful; lyrical; explores issues of women, poets, Irish

Boland addresses the struggles of a poetess finding her voice in a society which seems to lack a place for her. Through seemingly circular reasoning, she approaches, considers, defines, and returns to consider the significance of the events of Ireland and the writing of others in her own unique and powerful voice. An enchanting read that reminds women of their own experiences while addressing the dichotomy that keeps them separate.

A little-known gem

When I was younger I was a big fan of the ST:TOS and ST:TNG series of novels. But if you read these series for any length of time you soon come to realize that most of these books are poorly written crap.
"The Kobayashi Maru," however, is a hidden gem that stands the test of time. I own about 40 Star Trek novels and this is the only one I've read more than once. I recently read it for a third time after many years and it's still as good as I remember. What makes this book so special is that it relies on character rather than plot to keep you entertained. Whereas most Star Trek books assume everybody knows about the characters and concentrate on interesting plot twists, this book goes behind the larger than life heroic aspect of the original crew and examines them as real people with real hopes and dreams and fears.
The book is broken into four flashbacks of how Kirk, Scotty, Sulu, and Chekov each managed in their own way to beat the Starfleet Academy's Kobayashi Maru combat simulation, the so called "impossible scenario," framed within the present day story of a shuttlecraft problem. What makes these stories so charming is that they each show something special about the four characters, who really come to life in new ways when we see them as cadets, but still ring true as the people we know them as in the "present" as Enterprise crewmembers.
This book is true quality, and well worth buying even for casual fans of Trek.

Character studies of a quartet of Starfleet Cadets

Julia Ecklar does two things with the Kobayashi Maru simulation that was one of the most interesting sub-plots in "Star Trek II: the Wrath of Khan." The first is that she goes back and tells the story of how Jim Kirk became the only cadet at Starfleet Academy ever to beat the "no-win scenario." The second is that she also tells the stories of the cadet encounters of Chekov, Sulu and Scotty with that same scenario. The framing story involves a freak shuttlecraft accident with gives the four officers and McCoy nothing to do but tell their stories.
The four stories are quite different. Kirk's story, "The No-Win Scenario," is devoid of dramatic punch since we all know the outcome, but it does establish that the Kobayashi Maru test is less about tactical decisions and more about an individual's character. Obviously young Jim Kirk is going to have all the attributes that would make him "The Captain Kirk." Chekov's chapter, "How You Play the Game," spends little time on the Kobayashi Maru test focusing more on a survival exercise on the Moon base and Pavel's desire to be just like the great James T. Kirk. In "Crane Dance," Sulu tells the story of how he came to make the decisions he did during his taking of the test. The shortest and funniest tale is Scotty's "In Theory," which shows the engineer was not suited for command, even though he exhibited an unprecedented talent for destruction, when he could be bothered to pay attention to all those attacking Klingon war dragons.
These are an interesting set of stories, not particularly insightful but certainly true to the characters. I have been surprised that the idea of the Kobayashi Maru as a standardized Star Trek Rorschach test has not been repeated in the other series. After all, what Star Trek fan would not be interested in finding out what Spock, Worf, Data, Sisko, and everybody else did when confronted with the no-win scenario?

Outstanding

This is one of my all-time favorite books. I received it as a gift ten years ago, and I still reread it from time to time. I enjoy it thoroughly each time. The Kobayashi Maru is a simulator exercise all command students at Starfleet Academy must go through to test how well they respond to losing. Decades after they took the test, several officers of the starship Enterprise leave the ship in a small shuttlecraft on what is supposed to be a routine mission. When the shuttlecraft is disabled, cutting off the craft's communications and other vital functions, they are left with nothing but time, and they end up telling each other about their experiences with the Kobayashi Maru exercise. My favorite of the four stories is that of Scotty, who is in command school at Starfleet Academy to please his mother but feels that he is "meant more for commanding machines than commanding people." My second favorite is the story of Sulu, who in his first year in command school learns painful lessons about life, death, and meaning from his great-grandfather. This story makes me cry every time. I also like the story of Chekov, whose passions, resentments, and blind spots will remind the mature of what it was like to be an adolescent pickling in emotional turmoil. I felt that the story of Kirk was the weakest of the four; Kirk can't accept the concept of losing and will do anything to avoid coming face to face with defeat. For a man who is supposed to be intelligent and skilled, this is an asinine attitude. Life is about losing, and the sooner one comes to terms with that, the sooner one starts to grow. On the whole, however, this book is outstanding.

About the Author

Dr. Neil Todreas is professor emeritus at MIT. He has extensive nuclear power experience, having led an industry review group on the Three Mile Island situation from 1983-1988 and served on the NRC's Reactor Safety Research Committee. In addition to his part-time teaching and research, Dr. Todreas continues to be a leading consultant to industry and government. He is a Fellow at the ASME and a member of the national academy of engineering.

Dr. Mujid Kazimi is a professor and former head of the Department of Nuclear Engineering at MIT. He also has extensive nuclear power experience, having served on the Board of Managers of the Idaho National Energy Laboratory. He is also a Fellow at the American Nuclear Society and the AAAS, and a member of the AIChE, ASME and ASEE. Dr. Kazimi has been involved with several nuclear safety studies throughout his career, covering reactor systems, as well as their fuel cycles.

A very comprehensive text covering Nuclear Reactor Thermohydraulics. Cover Thermodynamics of nuclear power plants, and both single phase and two phase heat transfer and fluid flow. A excellent text by an expert and well respected nuclear engineering Professor!

About the Author
Alexander Kossiakoff (deceased) was a director and chief scientist of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, as well as program chair of the MS program in systems engineering and technical management at JHU Whiting School of Engineering.

William N. Sweet, now retired, was associate department head of the Fleet Systems Department at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory.

Samuel J. Seymour is the systems engineering vice chair at the Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering. He served under Professor Kossiakoff for more than twenty-five years.

Steven M. Biemer is an instructor at the Johns Hopkins University Whiting School of Engineering. He assisted Professor Kossiakoff in developing the first edition of this book.

This book is cumbersome, lacks quality writing, and is nearly void of illustrations.

First off, I am a professor and teach systems engineering. I bought/acquired both a hard copy and a soft Kindle copy of this text book and made it the required text for my course. I bought the Kindle version so I could cut and paste items into briefing slides for use in class presentation materials. When I got half way through the text, I got a notice that I exceeded the copy limit the publisher had set up. If you want to cut and paste material out of the text, don't buy a Kindle version of it since you will be prohibited from doing so.

The first half to the text is cumbersome. The author defines his own unique phases for his own unique life cycle model and breaks out the conceptual design phase into 3 phases and grudgingly goes through all the typical system engineering tasks in each phase. The result is he doesn't release a top-level requirements spec until the last page of chapter 8. Once you get through the first eight chapters, the layout improves and there is some pretty good content in the second half of the book. Throughout the entire book, however, there are relatively few figures or illustrations, and the ones that are presented are fairly basic.

Overall, this text doesn't measure up to the system engineering works offered by Blanchard, or by Eisner's book on Project and Systems Engineering Management. Both Blanchard and Eisner write much more persuasively, and they both fill their works with worthwhile figures that help illustrate system engineering topics. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words.

Useful, but not great

I've been practicing elements of systems engineering for several years and I was seeking a book that would help me pull it all together. This book definitely attempts to do that, but I found it less satisfying than I had hoped. The book does contain a good overview of systems engineering and touches on most if not all the concepts. As another reviewer indicated, the topic coverage is rather inconsistent. Some topics are covered with a great deal of rather wordy text and some, which are of in my view of equal importance, are skimmed over so briefly it feels like the authors felt compelled to mention them but did so in such a superficial way as to not really add much value, e.g. modeling techniques and methods. On the positive side, the explanations of the concept development process phases and principles were some of the best I have encountered. I have referred back to them on several occasions. In addition, the book was also effective in helping me better understand the role of the systems engineer relative to other engineering and project management disciplines. I often wished the book had contained more straightforward diagrams, but that's really a matter of taste. While I do think this is a useful book, I would recommend trying to get it used or from a library before buying new. Overall, I appreciate the authors writing the book, I just wish they had polished it a bit more.

I am using this for a class I am taking on Systems Engineering so I have read it pretty much cover to cover. Frankly, I have never given such a low score on a book before. It is poorly written, poorly organized, not enough diagrams and not enough examples. I find that there are times I have to read and reread a section to make sure I understand the point of the paragraph.

The book will discuss a topic in several different places so the reader has to bounce around over five different spots to get the total information shared about it. The book discusses many complex and abstract topics and doesn't give a concrete example in many instances.
