El Paso: A Novel, by Winston Groom

Three decades after the first publication of Forrest Gump, Winston Groom returns to fiction with this sweeping American epic.

Long fascinated with the Mexican Revolution and the vicious border wars of the early twentieth century, best-selling author Winston Groom brings to life a much-forgotten period of history in this episodic saga set in six parts. Pitting the legendary Pancho Villa against “the Colonel,” a thrill-seeking Bostonian railroad tycoon whose fading fortune is tied up in a colossal ranch in Chihuahua, El Paso opens during a time of dramatic upheaval in Mexico―its government being squeezed on one end by Villa’s revolutionaries and on the other by “filthy” American capitalists.

Content to observe the war from aboard his dazzling yacht, the Ajax, the Colonel is suddenly pulled into this drama when his famous Valle del Sol ranch is raided for nearly “two million and a half dollars in beef on the hoof.” Oblivious to the realities of war and hoping to salvage his losses, the Colonel whisks his family down to Mexico where they make a disturbing discovery: it was Villa who not only stole the cattle but also murdered their beloved ranch manager. Even worse, Villa’s henchmen abduct the Colonel’s grandchildren in another daring raid only days later.

Frantic, the aging patriarch and his adopted son race to El Paso, hoping to gather a group of cowboys brave enough to hunt down the generalissimo on his own turf. As the desperate Yankees quickly learn once they return to Chihuahua, their deep pockets and political clout mean next to nothing in a crumbling nation rife with communist sympathizers. After weeks of searching and with no trace of Villa, the Colonel fears all is lost―that is, until a twist of fate unites his party with that of Johnny Ollas, an aspiring matador whose wife has also been kidnapped by the marauding revolutionaries. Bloodied and battered, the two factions unite, galloping off on an extraordinary manhunt through some of the most inhospitable terrain on earth: the vast and snake-ridden Sierra Madre.

The novel explodes into an epic as an extraordinary cast of characters from both history and imagination begin to emerge, all vying to get their hands on the ever-elusive Villa. But no matter what prize each player ultimately seeks, no one is left unscathed in this sprawling story of heroism, injustice, and love. Replete with shootouts, daring escapes, and an unforgettable bullfight, El Paso brings to life a crucial moment in history and, in the process, becomes an indelible portrait of the American Southwest in the final days of the wild frontier.

Review
“Groom has unleashed a new work of imaginative, peripatetic fiction. . . . [El Paso] is a rich and engrossing tale ― something Hollywood will, no doubt, take little time to notice.” (The National Book Review)

“[Groom] combines military savvy with storytelling skill for a satisfying saga pitting an American railroad tycoon against Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa…An engaging epic that could be headed for the bestseller lists and then the big screen. This is the big one that fans have been waiting for, and they’ll grab it up like they would a delicious box of chocolates.” (Michele Leber - Booklist (starred review))

“El Paso is sure to entertain. . . . To Groom, the public is likely to say, ‘Welcome back to the land of fiction.’” (Jim Ewing - Clarion-Ledger)

“Winston Groom proves life ― and fiction ― really is like a delicious box of chocolates. . . . The novel has it all ― heroes, villains, family, rescues, shootouts, cattle, bits of history and much more. And maybe a feature film in its future?” (Celeste Williams - Fort Worth Star-Telegram)

“Groom’s epic narrative is a hefty yet entertaining page-turner, at times funny, heartbreaking, emotional, and brutal. An involving, intricate story vividly told.” (Donna Bettencourt - Library Journal (Starred Review))

“Groom’s expansive, rich novel is set in the harsh deserts and mountains of northern Mexico during the 1916 Mexican revolution, with sharply drawn fictional characters in a bloody mix with Gen. Pancho Villa and a cast of true-life personalities. . . . Battles, a tense prisoner exchange, and clever ransom negotiations round out this historically vivid and marvelously complex tale.” (Publishers Weekly)

“Dark and daring, El Paso does for the West what Gump did for the South ― it takes a tumultuous, crucial time in American history and feeds it to us in ways acute and unforgettable.” (Laura Taylor - Oxford Exchange)

“El Paso has the drama, coincidence and class intrigue of Dickens's Great Expectations in a setting reminiscent of Larry McMurtry's Lonesome Dove. . . . In Groom's capable hands, this history mixes easily into what is at its core a story of family, class warfare, loyalty and the violence of revolution.” (Bruce Jacobs - Shelf Awareness)

About the Author

Enjoyable read.
By Sky Soldier
I'm a fan of Groom and read most everything he has written. El Paso was a departure from his non-fiction books, but it was fun to see him twist history to tell the story. I think he should try to do more like this if he feels the urge. I appreciated the experience and decided to read more about Pancho Villa so I ordered the The life and times of Villa (not an amazon kindle book) in hard cover. It's enormous, but I'm up for the challenge.

Excellent historical saga!
By Note
This a saga of a unique family in crisis. The novel is filled with actual people from history weaved within the story. The story includes adoption, Pancho Villa, murder, snakes, rape, Tom Mix, torture, reading, flying, railroads, war, love, bull fighting, knife throwing, children, and more. It includes twists and turns, successes and failures, awful deaths and bravery, and loyalty and terrible betrayal. This kept my attention and deserves an A++++++

Such is the case of the protagonist best friend, and of Pancho Villa at times
By Carlos Calderon
The positive - The novel is based on historic facts that gives the reader a chance to glimpse into a time and place that one may know little about, even though these historic facts have shaped the recent history of the two countries. There are some very interesting links between historic characters, events of the time, technology advances and economics. So for someone interested in getting a glimpse of a chapter of the Mexican revolution, or history of the Mexico-USA border at El Paso, or the economics of the time, it may be worth to read the novel.
The not so positive - The book follows a style that makes one think of watching a movie, it may be that this was the intention of the writer. For the most part it is one-dimensional in time, and the characters follow strong stereotypes. Even though one gets to imagine from the novel certain real situations and places, these are not fully developed for the reader to go one level higher in terms of getting a deeper impression, even if it may not be realistic, and as a result the reader is not fully enveloped in the plot. That said, there are a few very interesting characters that are more developed and complex and that at times make the novel more engrossing. Such is the case of the protagonist best friend, and of Pancho Villa at times.
The negative - For the last quarter of the novel, the plot seems to restrict itself by some historical facts. The author seems concerned on producing an end that is sensical and heroic, and because of that it seems like there is certain rush into the predictable end. There is a mixture of realistic and fantastic developments that collide between each other during the kidnapping and persecution plot. Last, towards the end of the book, I found what I think is a inadmissible phrase, where one character makes the statement, while greeting another character that he does not speak "Mexican". As most of us know, there is not a language called Mexican. I was a bit perplexed because these are characters that live or spend a lot of time in Mexico or at the border, to make a mistake like that. The term, "Mexican" does not describe either colloquial or a local Spanish, nor a dialect, so that lead me to think if this was some kind of lapsus from the writer.

Maurice Fatio: Palm Beach Architect (The American Architect), by Kim I. Mockler

The ultimate winter playground on a sun-drenched tropical island accessible only by the Florida East Coast Railway or ocean-going yacht, Palm Beach was created as an exclusive haven for the pursuit of pleasure. Developed mainly during the flamboyant 1920s, Palm Beach was different from the storied northern resorts, such as Newport, Bar Harbor or the Hamptons. It was exotic, extravagant, and ultra modern a place where bankers mixed freely with gamblers and bootleggers, plutocrats with Ziegfeld showgirls and society doyennes. The glamorous winter houses and exclusive clubs, designed by its early style-setting architects, provided a swanky backdrop for seasons of carefree recreation, parties, dinners, and dancing under the stars.
MAURICE FATIO, PALM BEACH ARCHITECT tells the story of the prominent society architect whose many elegant buildings remain as much-admired Florida icons. Born and trained in Switzerland, Fatio (1897-1943) came to the United States to study American building and design methods in the early 1920s, and never left. Shortly after opening his practice in New York City, he was called to Palm Beach to design Mediterranean-style castles, British Colonial mansions, and modernist villas on spectacular sites with water views as far as the eye could see. Fatio built over 200 houses in Florida. MAURICE FATIO examines in detail 26 finest examples of the architect s designs, built between 1927 and 1939, including Otto Kahn s southern Oheka, Harold Vanderbilt s Eastover, Harrison Williams Blythedunes, Consuelo Vanderbilt s Casa Alva, and E.F. Hutton s second Palm Beach house, Four Winds.
Illustrated with 300 period and new photographs and multiple floor plans drawn especially for this work, the book also includes a catalogue of Fatio s nearly 160 residential commissions in the back. Brief narratives highlight the history of each building and the clients who commissioned them.

Review
The descriptive text is crisp and clear, presenting architectural detail in a way that is atonce knowledgeable, lucid and accessible to novices. Maurice Fatio: Palm Beach Architect is lavishly illustrated with a generous assortment of period photographs and new ones, as well as floor plans rendered especially for this gorgeously produced volume... In presenting 26 representative examples of Mr. Fatio s designs, Mr. Mockler incidentally provides us with a who s who in American societyand culture... Mr. Mockler s descriptive narratives include intriguing biographies and family histories; vivid word portraits of the residences; details about ornamentation, interior design and furnishings; information about additions, renovations and successive including current owners. We learn about where stones were quarried, which local artisans (wrought-iron craftsmen, etc.) made contributions to the architect s vision and how the various residences were situated with respect to the ocean and to Lake Worth. --Philip K. Jason, Florida Weekly --Philip K. Jason, Florida Weekly

To read this book is to step into another era and into the lives of this country s early 20th- century moguls and tastemakers. Mockler s research is fastidious, his eye astute (and the bibliography is a savory reading list for a long, luscious winter). His descriptions offer plenty of architectural analysis and, even better, a good guided tour, house by house. --Miami Herald, December 12, 2010

(Fatio)... put an elegant and enduring stamp on the town, and his rich body of work, now chronicled in MAURICE FATIO: PALM BEACH ARCHITECT, is finally getting its due. (Fatio's) houses were so well known during his lifetime that composer-lyricist Cole Porter was inspired to write brightly in the late 1930s: I want to live on Maurice Fatio's patio... --Veranda, September 2010

Hooray! Finally a book about Maurice Fatio!
By Steven Tyler
If you have ever lived or been to South Florida, then it would be hard not to have heard of the great architect, Addison Mizner. Whole streets and shopping centers are named after him. During Mizner's heyday there was one other great architect who has been grossly overlooked; his name was Maurice Fatio. Finally, a book has been written to rectify this inbalance and what a book it is!
The first thing I noticed with this book is its heft - substantial and made of quality materials. No skimping was done to diminish the books beauty. Upon opening the book and paging through its contents, one can immediately see that this is a visually stunning work. The book is filled with original black & white and contemporary color photographs, many taken by the author himself. I was thrilled to see that in each chapter all 26 houses included detailed floorplans. Each chapter contains a brief biography of the original and sometimes current owners, coupled with little tidbits of engrossing facts. The author then describes the house itself, creating with delightfully stylistic prose a vivid portrait of the interiors and exteriors of Maurice Fatio's designs of pure genius.
At the back of the book is a complete list of all the Florida homes and buildings that Fatio designed in his brief career (sadly he died at 49). I was stunned to see the author also added who commissioned the house, whether additions have since been made, but most interestingly, whether or not the structure has been demolished. Not every book of this kind offers such detail.
The author, Kim I. Mockler, has created a monumental work on the designs of Maurice Fatio, which I predict will be used by both professional architects and the fascinated layman for years to come.

As always, the quality of books published by Acanthus Press are without a doubt the best. As a collector of architectural monographs this book is a very important addition to my library. The quality of the book is exceptional and that includes the work of the author. I am pleased beyond words to have this book in my home.

Palm Beach: it's not all about Addison Mizner.
By Ulysses Dietz
Another delicious, gorgeously illustrated book full of floor plans and stories from Acanthus. Kim Mockler has done an honorable job telling the tale of this hugely important architect who seems to have been cast in Addison Mizner's larger-than-life shadow. But surely Fatio's houses in Palm Beach are every bit as complex and interesting as Mizner's.

Soldaten: On Fighting, Killing, and Dying, by Sonke Neitzel, Harald Welzer

On a visit to the British National Archive in 2001, Sonke Neitzel made a remarkable discovery: reams of meticulously transcribed conversations among German POWs that had been covertly recorded and recently declassified. Netizel would later find another collection of transcriptions, twice as extensive, in the National Archive in Washington. These were discoveries that would provide a unique and profoundly important window into the true mentality of the soldiers in the Wehrmacht, the Luftwaffe, the German navy, and the military in general -- almost all of whom had insisted on their own honourable behaviour during the war.
Collaborating with renowned social psychologist Harald Welzer, Neitzel examines these conversations -- and the casual, pitiless brutality omnipresent in them -- from a historical and psychological perspective, and in reconstucting the frameworks and situations behind these conversations, they have created a powerful narrative of wartime experience.

Review
“Striking. . . . Unlike memoirs, interviews or legal records, there is no personal agenda, nor are these conversations prejudiced by the kinds of ex post facto knowledge that can distort retrospective discussions. Instead [Neitzel and Welzer] offer ‘live’ commentary on how the war was unfolding from the German perspective. . . . Insightful and largely persuasive . . . this book presents an unprecedented source for understanding the ability to massacre.”
—The Guardian

“Neitzel and Welzer have put together a rare, truly interdisciplinary work.”
—The Atlantic

“A compelling read.”
—Sunday Express

“These extraordinary bugged conversations reveal through the eyes of German soldiers with stark fclarity and candor the often brutal reality of the Second World War, providing remarkable insight into the mentality and behavior of the Wehrmacht.”
—Sir Ian Kershaw, author of Hitler: A Biography

“The myth that Nazi –era German armed forces [were] not involved in war crimes persisted for decades after the war. Now two German researchers have destroyed it once and for all. . . .The material [they] have uncovered in British and American archives is nothing short of sensational. . . .[Soldaten] has the potential to change our view of the war.”
—Der Spiegel (Germany)

“This should be required reading for all those who believe that wars could be done cleanly.”
—Martin Meier, Neues Deutschland

“A significant contribution on the mental history of the Wehrmacht . . . The authors have written an incredibly readable book.”
—Die Zeit

“An equally fascinating and shocking book about the everyday madness of the Nazi war of extermination, which once again confirms Hannah Arendt’s thesis about the ‘banality of evil’ . . . A scholarly sensation.”
—Goethe Institut

MORE CHAFF THAN WHEAT
By John M. Lane
This is a review of SOLDATEN: ON FIGHTING, KILLING AND DYING - THE SECRET WW II TRANSCRIPTS OF GERMAN POWS by Sonke Neitzel and Harald Welzer. Mine is the hard cover edition translated from the German by Jefferson Chase and published by Alfred A. Knopf of New York in 2012. The book runs 437 pages including 917 endnotes, a bibliography and an index. The numbering of the endnotes is interesting. Instead of starting the numbers over again in each chapter, the notes are numbered in one, uninterrupted sequence to the end of the book. This is unusual, but actually made it a lot easier for me to follow the notes and connect them to the appropriate passages in the text.
The book also includes 21 reproductions of photographs, documents and other illustrations, all of which are rendered in black and white.

The authors are both German, or German-speaking Swiss. Professor Neitzel is a historian who taught at the Universities of Glasgow, Saarbrucken, Bern and Mainz before becoming professor of international history at the London School of Economics. Professor Welzer taught at the University of St. Gallen before joining the University of Flensberg as a professor of transformational design. He is also the head of FuturZwei, an educational foundation. The translator, Jefferson Chase, is a writer and journalist in Berlin who translated the German edition of this book, SOLDATEN: PROTOKOLLE VOM KAMPFEN, TOTEN UND STERBEN which was published in 2011 by S. Fischer Verlag of Frankfurt am Main.

The heart of the book is comprised of conversations by German and Italian soldiers who'd been captured by the Allies during World War II. Many of these conversations had been recorded surreptitiously by Allied intelligence officers. The most interesting parts had each been transcribed onto "thin sheets of paper [which] were still immaculately organized" and tied into thick bundles of about eight hundred pages each using string. Professor Neitzel was astonished to find such an extensive collection of source material in the British national archives. It had been declassified and was open to scholars. He located an even more extensive collection of similar source material in the National Archives in Washington, DC. A few researchers had made use of them, but nobody had really examined them systematically.

That was the authors' objective and it would have been a valuable publication for those interested in learning more about the war and the Wehrmacht. Instead of letting Axis soldiers speak for themselves, however, the authors chose to add a lot of invidious, confusing commentary of their own. For example, they quote a German sailor named Horst Minnieur, who describes the sexual exploitation of a "pretty Jewess" and other female prisoners, who were brutally raped then executed (pp. 164-166). Minnieur wasn't a member of the SS or involved with any of its murderous Einsatzgruppen, or mobile death squads.

Rather than explain the significance of that, the authors note that "Historian Bernd Greiner has documented similar cases in the Vietnam War." (p. 166). Indeed he has in KRIEG OHNE FRONTEN: DIE USA IN VIETNAM (2007). An adjunct professor of history at the University of Hamburg and an associate of the Institute for Marxist Studies and Research and the Center for Marxist Peace Research, Greiner's book is a detailed summary of My Lai and the atrocities committed by American soldiers under Lieutenant William Calley. Greiner studied in the US during the Vietnam War and writes like a devoted Leftist. He makes no mention whatsoever of any Communist atrocities, such as Hue, nor does he emphasize the fact that Calley was stopped by other American soldiers and then court-marshalled for violating American policies about respecting the rights of non-combatants. Had Calley been a Communist officer, for example, his conduct would have been exemplary if it was noted officially. He certainly would not have been court-marshalled during a time of war for it. To attempt a comparison between American soldiers in Vietnam and Werhmacht soldiers in WW II simply clutters up the narrative. Seaman Minnieur's complicity in rape and murder was consistant with Hitler's policy of depopulating Poland and annihilating the Jews. Lieutenant Calley violated American policies and was punished for it, a point Adjunct Professor Greiner and other America-haters fail to mention.

This could have been a much more valuable book if the authors had been more objective and included more wheat and less chaff in its pages. It did have some material about Axis soldiers I haven't seen before, but it also included a lot of Communist-era drivel that I've seen for decades on the extreme left.

Needs more background on the individuals being recorded. There is no human drama in this really.
By M. I. Smith
Clinical. A lot of psychological speak here - wade through the first couple chapters and it gets a bit better. I think the authors could have done so much more with this book or with the archival materials they had at hand; more to make a riveting piece of popular history. I don't regret having read the book but it was not what I expected when I purchased it - I was left wanting more detail on the personal stories of the subjects whose conversations were being recorded and less discussion of the why's and wherefores of soldiering. Nevertheless, I learned a few things.

Propaganda Piece- Yeah we get it,,, you don't like Hitler.
By Mark K
Thought I would get a bunch of source material to better assess history. At the ten percent mark of the book only two soldiers had been quoted. The first three chapters are spent indoctrinating you on the Evils of the Nazis. Don't know if I can bring myself to finishing it.

Excellent does not even begin!!!
By TR8c
I am an apprentice electrician who has done a bit of everything. I have a grand desire to LEARN and this book has continually satiated that desire. I have been reading it in conjunction with an illustrated guide to the NEC and can't imagine how anyone could put the practical in written form any better. I strongly suggest this book for anyone who desires to not only be an electrician, but one with a mind towards doing your job safely. Not simply for self-preservation, but for the safety of client and bystander as well. I must confess that I am not finished with the book, but am gleaning loads of wonderful guidance. EXCELLENT!

Fun easy read
By PAUL
Several years ago I ( DIY ) wanted to do some advanced electrical work at home and had enough sense to buy a Black and decker home wiring book . What I very quickly realised was how little knowledge I had about safety , wire guages , devices , grounding , panels etcetera . I was hooked I bought many more books my last was wiring a house for pros by pros by Rex Cauldwell ( I wish I could personally thank that man A great book) Practical Electrical Wiring is well written and easy to understand ... I'm too old to become an electrician I never knew I would love the trade ... Money well spent for this book highly recommended ...

Great book for a DIY person
By Darrell Adams
I'm not through with the book yet but so far it is an easy read and in a logical order. I have a good understanding of how residential wiring works but this will take you to a new level.

It explains the details of why electricians do what they do with the products they use. How components operate, how to size your conductor and more and more.

I'm putting up a large metal building and I was looking for information on commercial wiring, this book covers it all. Running a sub panel, conduit, how the required AFCI breakers operate and why they are required and where.

Highly recommended.
