Different coaches have different theories about how to coach a successful debate team. As you will find in this book, I believe in understanding debate from the practical side.

In this book, we start our journey with debating in the classroom, where most students encounter debate for the first time. We move on to the moment of shock and surprise when you find out you are the debate coach and need to recruit a debate team.

Then we begin to study debating, through actual debates. We look at the gender equality debate, and after that, look at the importance of definitions. From there, we move on to the right to die debate, for the individual to take his/her own life, and contrast that with the capital punishment debate. Why do we say “Yes” in the one instance and “No” in the other?

We move next to the prohibition of smoking in public places. Do smokers have any rights? Where can you smoke a cigarette nowadays? Then it is off to England, stopping at Oxford, to hear Malcolm X debate the use of extremism to achieve legitimate goals. Finally, a voice from the past century shares information that every debate coach should know.

He is the Co-Founder and Co-Organiser of EdCamp Santiago: free, participant-driven, democratic, conversation based professional development for teachers, by teachers. EdCamp Santiago 2013 was held at Universidad UCINF in Santiago. Thomas is also a past member of the Advisory Board for the International Higher Education Teaching and Learning Association (HETL), where he also serves as a reviewer and as the HETL Ambassador for Chile. Excellent Resource

This book is an excellent resource for debate coaches and debaters. It has recently been revised by the author. There are many great ideas in this book to use with your debate team all year long. Author Thomas Baker clearly has a deep knowledge about debating. He definitely knows what he is talking about because his ideas are practical, since he is a debate coach and a debate trainer. The book was revised, streamlined, edited, and reorganised, leaving out promotional material. All that remains is debating, debating, debating. I highly recommend this book.

The ultimate debate team coaching guide!

Being the man in charge of my debate team I know how difficult it sometimes gets when it comes to properly coaching your team members to achieve maximum performance. There are so many things you have to take into account (research, persuasion, respect, etc) that it's easy to forget some of the essential keys! This is why I'm rating this book with 5 stars. Thomas Jerome Baker helped me to keep fresh in my mind all the aspects that I have to remember to become the best coach I can be. Excellent job! Highly recommended.

About the Author

Sharon Ann Holgate is a freelance science writer and broadcaster. She has�presented on BBC Radio 4 and the BBC World Service, presented video podcasts for medical research charity the Myrovlytis Trust, and competed in a "Boffins Special" on The Weakest Link. She�earned a�Ph.D. in physics from the University of Sussex, where she was a Visiting Fellow in Physics and Astronomy for nine years. Her articles have appeared in New Scientist, The Times Higher Education Supplement, Science Careers, Flipside, E&T, Focus, Physics World, Interactions, Modern Astronomer, and Astronomy Now. Her�first book The Way Science Works (co-authored with Robin Kerrod) was shortlisted for the Royal Society Junior Books Prize.�She was also shortlisted for the broadcasting category of the Association of British Science Writers' Awards in 2005. Well worth the wait!

This book has been underway for a while, in an earlier position I worked with the author developing her ideas about how to present the material in this book. I must quickly say I have no link with the publishers now and so have no reason to 'big' up the book. Sharon Ann has put much of the last 6 years of her time into this excellent book and it really has been worth the wait. The language is clear and engaging and I think the book sets a new standard for texts in this area. If you are taking your first course in solid state physics you will not find a better book to help you.

Old Book, Good Read!

The Girl with the Silver Eyes was originally published in 1980 - thirty-six years ago!!! I read it quite a long time ago and thought no kids would be interested in such an old book, but I was wrong. I introduced it to a small-group book club in my 4th-grade classroom, and they loved the it!

Excellent overview

Excellent overview of computer-aided translation technology, with an enfasis on translation memories.
The book is very well-written. At the end it offers reviews of various softwares.
As it is an academic book, you should not expect anything very technical in IT. It is just a presentation of different technologies.

In this lucid and engaging analysis of the nature of society, Roger Trigg examines the scientific basis of social science and shows that philosophical presuppositions are a necessary starting point for the study of society.

This second edition contains three new chapters that demonstrate the relationship of the philosophy of social science to politics, and takes into account recent developments including the impact of rational choice theory, and attacks on the possibility of reason by postmodernists.

Themes in the book include the relation of individual to society, the basis of our understanding of other societies, and the character of social reality. Is there such a thing as society? What of the threat of relativism? These and other questions are examined in depth, but with a clarity that introduces the issues to those new to the subject.

About the Author
Roger Trigg is Professor of Philosophy at the University of Warwick. His most recent books include Rationality and Science (Blackwell, 1993), Rationality and Religion (Blackwell, 1998), the widely-read Ideas of Human Nature (second edition, Blackwell, 1999), and Philosophy Matters (Blackwell, forthcoming).
