Great for Professional Development

One of the things that Debbie Diller does so well is make her books very accessible and practical for actual classroom teachers. In this book, she provides numerous resources for evaluation/assessment, grouping, planning and even teaching small group literacy lessons in a flexible, differentiated and systematic way.

Because the beginning of the book contains a great deal of theory, it isn't quite as exciting as the later, more practical chapters (i.e. not a beach read)but the information is related clearly and I understandable terminology.

Four stars because, while the appendix is chock full of wonderful resources and templates, the Kindle version is difficult to utilize without recreating the templates myself. I wish that authors would create a secure site where readers could go to print off PDFs of great resources.

It arrived on time. It is a great book to help with organizing small groups. I've done small groups for the last 10 years, but this book gave me tips on organization, folders for data, and sample from other teachers. Excellent book.

Boring and misleading

This book summary made it seem like when the husband's best friend was a freak in bed yet the sex he had with the wife wasn't even that wild. The wife has sex with her husband beforehand and it at least included foreplay, her husband seemed open to BDSM so why did the wife feel like she "needed more". Both sex scenes didn't really get the engine running, if you know what I mean.

Tiffany is married to Dale. She likes to explore different aspects of their sex life but fears that things may become stale when Dale's best friend, Ed, moves into their house. Ed's business is struggling and he needs a temporary place to stay. Once Ed arrives at the house, he sees it as an opportunity to let Tiffany know that he has feelings for her.

I absolutely loved this story. Tiffany was solely focused on her husband and suddenly had two hot men to choose from. Jamie Fuchs's ability to write short sexy stories keeps getting better. If you've ever been attracted to two men at the same time, this story is for you. Even if you didn't act out your desires, you can live vicariously through Tiffany and enjoy the ride. I can't wait to read the other stories in the series.

One dimensional horny housewife makes out with husband's best friend

Somewhat unbelievable, but it's a fantasy after all. I'd prefer a little more foreplay between Ed and Tiff. Women do not act the way that Tiff reacted as portrayed by the author. Tiff is portrayed as a one dimensional woman, closer to a horny teenage boy, than an adult married woman. Women tend to need some time for arousal, to get past the social stigma of making love to a husband's friend with the husband passed out in front of her. Winning over the reader in this story was not achieved. Rather, a description of Tiff's thought process and her growing lust for Ed as an adult woman would greatly improve the story. Tiff's reluctance finally overcome by Ed's remarkable ability to gain Tiff's confidence and to connect with her would add a good deal to this fantasy.

the original and the best!

I just started a 16-month dental assisting program & received this textbook for it, from my school. so far, I've learned that this is the original book written for dental assistants, by dental assistants. it's the best & if you're going to school for dental assisting, yet still have to purchase your own books, I recommend getting this and the associated workbook. they have both helped me learn sooo much! the only downside is that it's sooo heavy! & I have to walk a lot, so it gets really heavy in my backpack but there's exactly 1,184 pages in it, so...go figure! lol but, hey, at least I'm getting a pretty good workout from it! like I said, I didn't get mine from amazon but I still got the dvd & if I would've had to get mine on my own, I would've gotten it off of amazon.

i haven't finished the book yet, but i found it very useful and helpful. It is a complete review,with instructions,and a book that is continuously updating through the web. I can choose to review depending on my mood, i can read from the book, from the web,from the cd. I can take exams to test what i have learned. no regrets. I will not resell it after my review. I am also planning to buy the workbook after I paid my credit card. Amazon delivers on time.

Remarkable book providing a contemporary glimpse of Advaita Vedanta

Wonderful mind-bending book. Maharishi was a close devotee of Swami Brahmananda Saraswati, the last uncontested Shankaracharya of Jyotir Math. Maharish has not had a reputation as a great philosopher but rather as a unparalleled manager and great practical teacher bringing the most profound practices of the Yoga Sutras to more people than anyone else has in history. This book shows his teachings at another level, but still characteristically direct and contemporary. It is a joy to be made witness to Maharishi's efforts to communicate and open up awareness to Vedanta in such a fresh and intimate way. Maharishi focuses directly on the sutras and bypasses renowned earlier commentaries on the grounds that they approached the Brahma Sutras using the language and concerns of their times. The focus is on the moon, more than the finger pointing to the moon.

I loved the way that Vernon Katz's book

Speaking as a dedicated long-term practitioner (but not a teacher) of Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation and Sidhi program, I loved the way that Vernon Katz's book, Conversations with Maharishi (Volume 1), begins with the author defining Maharishi's down-to-earth practical approach to his teaching: Vernon Katz points out that unlike other spiritual teachers he encountered, Maharishi "was always exploring new avenues and new practical programs, forever refining and expanding. His teaching was a living growing organism." (Page vii) For example, Maharishi's definition of the Brahma Sutra (Unity Consciousness or the Veda) is that there is nothing other than Brahma. However, as Vernon Katz was working with Maharishi to translate the Brahma Sutra, he pointed out to Maharishi the danger of saying that all is Brahman and there is nothing else." (Page 128) So Maharishi went on to explain that the Brahma Sutra will have significant meaning only for those who are in Unity Consciousness or are approaching Unity. For others it will be meaningful in the sense of showing them that life is like a game that everyone enjoys, but the real joy comes only to the champion (Brahman). This apparently prompted Maharishi to come up with his saying that "knowledge is different in different states of consciousness." I find this practical approach to interpreting the idea that all is Brahma also lends itself to interpreting the idea that "all is love," which is the very essence of that widely-read and often-quoted book, A Course in Miracles, said to be authored by Jesus. For according to Maharishi love translates as unity,and the Veda (Brahman) means unity, unity being all there is. Having recently arrived in Unity Consciousness myself I am in a position to know that Unity Consciousness is indeed universal Love, and love truly is all there is. What we perceive to be the enemy is indeed just the intellect in its immature state as the ego, and A Course in Miracles was written to convince the intellect that the ego is unbelievable.

Good if you like this style, but avoid the eBook

The Cummings text is less readable than the Bailey version. Cummings has more detail of the results of studies and Bailey has broader brush strokes. I think this comes down to preference.

I am very disappointed, however, in the poor functionality of the electronic version of the Cummings book. About half of the time that I log on, the eBook doesn't work. I have contacted customer service multiple times and each time they say they're working on it. Eventually I got fed up and asked them if it would be reasonable to have either a refund for the eBook or to have a credit, they gave me the following response. (Buyer beware!)

sometimes better, sometimes worse

I am one of the few people in my dept that buy each and every edition of this book, but it seems that I can't throw away the older ones, in may subjects it seems to be getting better, specially when you are talking about genes or dealing with cancer, but in other areas it is getting worse, like dealing with vocal fold paralysis or sleep apnoea.

About the Author
John Goerzen is an accomplished author, system administrator, and Python programmer. He has been a Debian developer since 1996 and is currently president of Software in the Public Interest, Inc. His previously published books include the Linux Programming Bible, Debian Unleashed, and Linux Unleashed.

Brandon Rhodes is a consulting programmer who also teaches the Python language professionally for organizations that are adding the language to their tool set. He has spoken at PyOhio; at PyGotham; at national PyCon conferences in Canada, Ireland, and Poland; and at Django conferences in Portland, Wales, and Warsaw, where he was delighted at the creativity of the organizers, who rented a circus tent for the occasion. He will chair the flagship PyCon North America conference in Portland in 2016–2017. Brandon is interested in how ideas like the Clean Architecture can help programmers organize code more effectively and in what we can learn from writers in other fields about offering kind and actionable critiques of each other’s work. These guys know what they are talking about..

As I am relatively new to Python I originally felt that such advanced programming subjects were way above my head, not just due to my overal knowledge on Python itself, but mostly due to the lack of knowledge on all the underlying 'basic' matters on network programming. This, however, is exactly where John and Brandon did an amazing job and why I bought the book: they explain everything (from the TCP and UDP protocol to memcached) to the detail (in plain English!) before actually showing you an example how you can let Python do something magic with it. There are tons of practical examples that are applicable in daily life (varying from basic stuff such as leveraging Google Maps by calling a raw socket to wrapping a client socket with TSL) and all of these are well-written and elegant.

The book provides a solid foundation on all the basics you need to know to get started - and beyond - on network programming in Python. These guys clearly know what they are talking about (and do a good job sharing this knowledge!), which is clearly demonstrated by the vast amount of useful tips and best practices that you might otherwise only learn through trial and error yourself (call me lazy, but I prefer learning it from a set of experts). Foundations of Python Network Programming is not just a Python cookbook: it's a Python cookbook which also teaches you the foundations on networking while showing you some best practices. For beginners it's a must-have, and for the more advanced coders it's a great reference guide of which there's a lot to learn, without a doubt.

Good depth and breadth of topics

Why I picked it up: I know Brandon through PyATL and was confident that his years of experience would ensure that he put out a high quality book. He more than met my expectations.

Why I finished it: The conversational tone made it easy to zip through the sections covering material I was familiar with, saving more time to study the rest more completely.

I'd give it to: Any Python programmer who wants a better understanding of the fundamentals of network programming. Even an experienced Python programmer will learn a few new tricks from the sections covering more modern tools like ZeroMQ and paramiko.

This is the second edition of Foundations of Python Network Programming. The first edition by John Goerzen was released in 2004, and while a lot has changed in the way we use computer networks since then the fundamentals remain constant. Brandon Rhodes has improved the second edition by cleaning up the old examples that are still relevant, updating or replacing the ones that became obsolete, and adding new material. The results benefit from Brandon's high level of expertise and depth of knowledge in networking.

The book covers a broad range of topics, and is organized so that each section builds on the knowledge of the previous chapters. The discussions move from from raw TCP and UDP to encryption with TSL, and then on to application protocols like HTTP, SMTP, POP, IMAP, and ssh. Each section explains not just how to do a task, but why doing it that way works.

The examples in the book are clear and illustrate the concepts described in the text. There are a few places where the exposition would benefit from a diagram or two (especially in the description of TCP message windows), but the explanation given does stand on its own.

Every chapter of Foundations of Python Network Programming is filled with practical advice. After establishing the fundamentals of networking in the first few chapters, the book goes on to cover architectural issues that come up when creating client server applications. The different uses for RPC and message queue architectures are covered, as well binary versus text wire protocols. The latter chapters, which cover higher level protocols, discuss best-of-breed libraries, removing much of the guesswork for Python programmers choosing tools for new projects.

I recommend Foundations of Python Network Programming for programmers who want to move beyond the usual web framework-based development paradigm to learn more about what is going on behind the scenes. It is concise, but written in a conversational style that makes it easy to read. After reading the book, you will have a good grounding in the fundamentals of networking and be introduced to many more complex subjects. Brandon includes a number of references to other sources of more information, as well, for readers who want to go beyond the fundamentals covered here.

Exhaustive and Authoritative

I wish I'd had this book years ago. It's a very solid introduction to both network protocols and to using Python to work with them. It demystifies some nasty parts of network programming and offers lots of good advice for real-world use for everything from UDP up the stack to SSH and RPC. I could imagine the book being the main assigned text for an upper-division undergraduate course or the go-to reference for a skilled web developer or Python-literate network admin.

And ... it's well enough written to be enjoyable reading, pretty much wherever you open the book.

I have to note that there are a couple of very low ratings here from a couple of folks who expected this to be a Python 3 book. I expected, and received, a book covering Python 2.5-2.7. If that's what you're after, I suggest you mentally subtract those ratings from the average. Their complaints with the publisher may be fair, but they tell you nothing about the quality of the real book.
