Beautiful family! Inspirational story!

I began reading Daughters By Design the evening I received it and didn't put it down until I had turned the last page. It was riveting. What a thrilling story of God's love and care for two Cambodian orphans through the obedience of an "older" missionary couple. Paul and Paula's genuine faith and simple obedience will touch your heart and challenge you to say "yes!" to God.

A Blessing to Hear the Rest of the Story

I was overjoyed when I found out Mrs. Jarot would be publishing a book about the amazing adoption journey she and her husband have been on with their girls. I had the great privilege of watching God work miracles the first few months the girls were in the Jarot home and then eagerly awaited His continued mercies as they struggled against all human odds to legally make the girls their own. It is a story that had to be shared. Nearly everyone who knows me has heard at least part of it and they all stand in amazement at what God has done. Watching this family and reading this book have given both my husband and myself the desire to expand our own family through adoption one day. It also opened my eyes to the need for people to adopt older children. Through it all the Lord is given all praise and glory and as much as this story is Mrs Jarot's or her girls'; it is ultimately about God's heart of love.

An adoption miracle!

I love this story. It is real; honest and full of Christ-like parenting! If you have any thoughts about international adoption, you need to read this story.
December 2004 the Jarots were encouraged to seek out a young, precocious orphan in Cambodia. They followed the Lord's call; went to Cambodia and came back to their home in Thailand with not one, but two beautiful young girls. This story lovingly describes how these two girls became part of a family; captured the hearts of many; and became U.S. citizens against all odds. Miracle after miracle are described as the Jarots fought bureaucracy and overcame numerous barriers to legally adopt these girls. It is an amazing story and so well told. You will fall in love with them and shed a few tears along the way.

About the Author
Stanley Baran is the founding chair of the Department of Communication at Bryant University, where he teaches courses in mass communication and communication theory. His academic interests include critical research in mass communication, mass media and social construction of reality, as well as development and improvement of media literacy skills. Dr. Baran has published 10 books, several scholarly articles, and sits or has sat on the editorial boards of numerous journals. His work has been translated into six languages. He was a Senior Fulbright Scholar, Institute for Journalisms und Kommunikationsforschung, Hannover, Deutschland, in 1997. He has served as a consultant for many corporations and organizations, including IBM, ABC, GTE, and Westin Hotels.

Dennis K. Davis is an emeritus professor in the College of Communications at Penn State University. His teaching and research interests include mass communication theory, new media literacy, international communication, research methods, and political communication. He has served as a tenured full professor at Cleveland State University, Southern Illinois University, and the University of North Dakota. He was director of the School of Communication at the University of North Dakota and has served as editor of the JOURNAL OF BROADCASTING & ELECTRONIC MEDIA, published by the Broadcast Education Association. He has co-authored four books on political communication, mass communication theory, and news audience research, as well as numerous articles, chapters, and reviews. He has headed divisions of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication and the National Communication Association. From 1979 to 1980, he was a Fulbright Senior Lecturer at the University of Amsterdam and the University of Louvain la Neuve. His research has won the Donald McGannon Award for Social and Ethical Relevance in Communication Policy Research from Fordham University and the Broadcasting Preceptor Award from San Francisco State University. In 2010, he received the Distinguished Educator Award from the Mass Communication & Society Division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. The award recognizes teaching excellence and influence on pedagogy.

This is possibly the best book on mass comm theory available. One thing I wish the authors would rethink, though, is why they need to include "normative theories" as a separate paradigm? Another is that they might place race and gender scholarship more central to the field -- these have transformed mass comm research and theory building over the decades.

Good book to start with

The book is quite good. The seller sent it in pretty fast. Only complaint would have been that the book looks like it had been dunked in water and theb air dried. But then I didn't give it much thought as it came cheap and I opted for a handed down book, which meant getting some deficiency in quality. Recommend for communication researchers and teachers.

Kindle version poor

I bought rented this book and bought Annual Editions Mass Media 12/13 for my grad class. Both books appear in pdf form. What I mean by this is the margin space is large, the images appear like pdfs requiring the reader to zoom in and maneuver around the page just to be able to read the content. I wouldn't recommend the version for the Kindle Fire.

This richly illustrated book introduces Iroquois history, social organization, religion and material culture.

About the Author
Michael Johnson has researched the material culture, demography and linguistic relationships of Native American people for more than 30 years. A collector of data, photographs and artefacts, he has presented many exhibitions, including annual exhibitions at the American Museum in Bath. He is the author of scores of articles and has previously written a number of titles in the Men-at-Arms series.

Great Series

Just about any Osprey publication is going to be great. They used to have "cheesy" illustrations, but in the more recent volumes the quality has gone up. The illustrations are key since a lot so much of military history predates the photograph. But when cheesy artwork is used, it ruins the entire book. This one here on the Iroquois confederation has a nice mix of superior artwork and historic photographs. The text is written by experts, but if you want to go deeper you will have to visit a university library and find research monographs by super-specialists. As such, this volume is only an introduction; a general overview. But it a solid popular introduction to a political-military body that is central to US and world history. It is even claimed that the US Constitution bears influences of Iroquois Confederation self-governance, but this is not addressed in this volume.

Just not worth it.

If you are looking for a history of the Iroquois in the 1700's this isn't it. There is very little about the tribes in that period and it is more a history of the Iroquois in our time. What little history of the tribes in the 1700"s is very skimpy. The entire book is more of a lite history lite. Overall a big disappointment.

best of de Sade

The paperback of this book was my first exposure to de Sade's writing, and I found it weird, quirky, and strangely interesting enough that I also bought and read several others of his extant works.
This one is far and away the best, in my opinion.
I don't imagine de Sade's writing would appeal to many people, but it is certainly interesting in some ways. The original was in French, of course. I do not read French, but this translation appeared outstanding to my American English understanding. The wording is impressive in many ways, and the translator appears to have done a truly excellent job of preserving the color and meaning of the author's work.
By the way, the other de Sade works I read after this one were less worthwhile and the "120 Days" was a complete waste of my time. If you choose to read de Sade, this is by far the best book I've seen from that peculiar author.

Prepare for Sade!

What an addition to my classic literature collection. I immediately remove the dust jacket of every hardcover book I procure to reveal the raw antique quality of the tome. This book looks great and contains subject matter even more shocking and questionable then I imagined. The Marqui's writing was not simply edging on the boundaries of his time. This is highly explicit for ANY century. Wonderful!
