About the Author
H. Leighton Dickson grew up in the wilds of the Canadian Shield, where her neighbours were wolves, moose, perennial-eating deer and the occasional lynx. She studied zoology at the University of Guelph and worked in the Edinburgh Zoological Gardens, where she was chased by lions, wrestled deaf tigers and fed Polar Bears medicine via baby bottles! She has been writing since she was thirteen, has three dogs, two cats, three children and one husband. She has managed to keep all of them alive...so far.

A great read!

I really enjoyed this book, and am looking forward to the second one.

The story was engaging, the characters were complex and well thought out, and the writing was high quality. This is one of those gems you always hope to find in independently published books.

I cant think of anything to say about the story that wouldnt be a spoiler, and isnt already included in the synopsis. Just try this series, you wont regret it.

It's Grrrreattt!!!

I have had mixed experiences with independently published e-books. This is by far the best "indie" I have read. The basic premise of a stratified Asian feline civilization, is well-developed, and serves to point out the latent tensions and inherent injustice in any caste system.

There were a few times, especially early in the read, when I got confused about characters. Further in, once the personalities were more clearly defined, I did better. The back-story is intriguing, and I appreciated how the author paced out the clues. I do look forward to reading the next installment!

Excellent Start to a Fantasy Series

H. Leighton Dickinson's To Journey in the Year of the Tiger (Tails from the Upper Kingdom) surprised me with how well the author delineated each character, making the character traits so specific that it was easy to tell who was who from how the character acted and spoke, which was good because the author made the unfortunate choice of giving two of the characters, both lion-men, names that were almost identical. It made sense because they were brothers, but early on, I was not always able to recall which was being referred to just by name, however, as I said their personalities and duties were so different it always quickly became apparent who was being referred to.

I almost made a big mistake and quit early on in a book I ended up thoroughly enjoying because there multiple earth cultures were seemingly hodgepodged into the cat-human-hybrid empire in which the tail, er, tale takes place. HOWEVER, I read on long enough to get excellent hints that there was a very valid and logical reason behind this rather than being the amateurish world-building I initially feared.

This novel earned four stars because, though the characterization and plotting were excellent, the similar names of the two characters, as well as some rather unfortunate formatting on the kindle version created a few stumbles, and the ending didn't have much in the way of resolution.

Since I did enjoy reading this book and LOVED the sequel To Walk in the Way of Lions (Tails from the Upper Kingdom) I highly recommend this book.

I can remember so well the total overwhelm of being so ill with Hashimoto's and celiac and fighting through brain fog and zero energy to find ways to help myself back to a normal life.

A Must Read For Those Starting Out On The AIP Diet

This book is amazing and I wish it had been around 3 years ago when I initially started on the AIP diet. Even as someone who is an AIP "Veteran" I was still able to learn and glean new information from this book.

I love how Eileen breaks everything down for you so that following this diet is not too hard or overwhelming. She highlights what you can eat and really tries to get you to focus on that instead of what you can't eat. I believe this helps make the transition a more positive experience. She touches on the lifestyle changes you need to make as well because those are equally as important to healing as the dietary changes. Reading this book is really like having a conversation with a good friend who wants to help you succeed, and the fact that it is compact enough to carry with you is a huge plus.

All the areas of beginning the AIP that used to overwhelm me and cause me to stand in the kitchen and cry were touched on in this book including tips on eating out, navigating the holidays and traveling. Everything you need to be know to be successful on the AIP diet can be found in this book. I cannot recommend it enough.

concise, infomative and motivational

Eileen is the perfect person to write this great book. If you want to use diet and lifestyle to control your disease you will find all the information you need in this book. Eileen uses diet and lifestyle to control her RA and has been for years. Over the years I have watcher her chase down every trend, article, rumor, piece of conventional wisdom, study, anything that has to do with healing and research it to its bottom most level. To its origin. She has interviewed the researchers on her podcast and bluntly asked them every detail of everything. She interacts with a vibrant community of people who are already successfully using diet and lifestyle to control disease and keeps on top of current research. Her book is informative and inspirational, also motivating.

I am one of the people she interacts with who successfully uses diet and lifestyle to control disease. Eileen sent me two advanced copies of the book (one to give away) and it floored me. So concise, so motivating and so condensed without losing anything. There is a one star review on here that says the book is full of information that can be found for free on the internet. That is technically true but misleading. The information on the internet is mixed in with any bloggers opinion plus inaccurate information plus empirical speculation. Eileen's book is tiny, compact and manageable compared to the eternity of the internet. Not to mention accurate.

Not transferable with PDF to my computer.

I made a mistake because I thought this docment could be viewed with my computer also. I bought it for iPad but I don't own an iPad. This is a very bad mistake but also a very bad format for a book like this that should be viewable on personal computer.

About the Author

Paul Wallace (PhD, University of California, Berkeley) is Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Missouri, Columbia. He has been a consultant on South Asia to a member of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, the US Attorney General’s Office, defense lawyers, and other agencies in North America and has received five Smithsonian-funded awards for national election studies in India. In September 2003, Professor Wallace served as the expert witness on Sikh violence at the Air India trial in Vancouver, Canada.

His research in India includes a Senior Fulbright Research Award in 1972, and funding from the Ford Foundation, 1988–89, the American Institute of Indian Studies (1980–81), and various government and non-government groups in India. Professor Wallace is the author or editor of eight books and 40+ book chapters and articles. His last co-edited book is India’s 2009 Elections: Coalition Politics, Party Competition and Congress Continuity” published by SAGE Publications in 2011.
