From Publishers Weekly
Menuhin, who began as one of the most remarkable child prodigies since Mozart and, over his 83 years (1916- 1999), became a kind of musical elder statesman, has found his ideal biographer in Burton. The veteran BBC director and producer, who also wrote the best book to date about Leonard Bernstein a few years back, is friendly and fair, with a wry appreciation of Menuhin's comic aspects. Burton does a better job sorting out the chronology and the reality of Menuhin's spectacular boyhood successes than the violinist himself did in his eloquent memoir Unfinished Journey. Although his early successes were in San Francisco, Menuhin was born in the Bronx to ‚migr‚ Russian-Jewish parents who realized early their boy was a genius and seemed always in a quandary about how far his talent should be exploited. From the mid-1920s to the outbreak of WWII, Menuhin was one of the preeminent international virtuosos, though after the war many critics believe that his playing deteriorated. (Burton disputes this opinion, writing that there is no evidence of the violinist's decline until the 1970s.) Music was only one of Menuhin's passions, however. He was among the first in the West to espouse yoga and the principles of organic food; he established a notable school for young musicians; he became involved in high-level diplomatic maneuverings for UNESCO and in the Arab-Israeli dispute; and eventually he took up conducting. Burton relays these accomplishments with winning humor and a scrupulous attention to detail that should please musical scholars; the only flaw is the absence of a discography. B&w photos.

From Library Journal
Menuhin (1916-99) was a child prodigy who developed into one of the greatest violinists of our age. His tireless work in his later years as a humanitarian and teacher earned him the honor of being considered one of the century's best-loved musicians. Burton, a BBC director and commentator and author of Leonard Bernstein, drew upon a 40-year association with Menuhin to create this richly detailed, always engrossing narrative. The biography is divided into five chronological sections. The subtitle of the fifth "I Was Born Old and Have Been Growing Younger Ever Since" is an apt summary of Menuhin's remarkable life and accomplishments, for it seems that as he aged and as his performing skills declined, he turned with indefatigable energy to myriad worthy projects. Burton stops well short of hagiography, however: the controversies in Menuhin's life personal, political, and musical are candidly dealt with. Each chapter ends with a listening list, which is very useful for tracing Menuhin's development as a performing artist at each successive stage of his career. Overall, this is an outstanding work about a remarkable individual that belongs in all collections. Larry Lipkis, Moravian Coll., Bethlehem, PA

A Yardstick.
By Trevor L. Buisson
This book is probably the most comprehensive biography I have ever read. Humphrey Burton's study on Yehudi Menuhin's life-history is a yardstick by which all authors of biographies could and should measure themselves.

I was given this book as a gift several years ago and before I decided to read it, the paperback sat on my bookshelf with time gradually yellowing it's pages. It was only until recently when I obtained a DVD performance of Hepzibah Mehuhin playing Mendelssohn's 'Variations Serieuse' that I felt inspired to finally read the book. As Hepzibah was not as famous as her brother (yet no less talented and gifted), my wish was to glean as much about Hepzibah as I could. As she played such an integral part of Yehudi's life my thirst was sufficiently quenched, and in the process I learned about the humble, giving, intellectual, spiritual, eccentric and monumental musician and character that Yehudi Menuhin was.

I would highly recommend this book to all musicians both classically and jazz orientated as a highly informative and satisfactory read. If your choice is to live the life of a musician, or if serious music is a part of your life, then this book will contribute to the musical ethos that is a musician's and music-lover's lifelong study.

The only downside I experienced regarding this book was that I accidentally left it at the airport just before finishing the very last chapter. This has proved to be deeply frustrating; so now I must source a copy or alternatively I shall have to go out and buy another. The standard of the writing and research however, is of such a consistent and unwavering high caliber that I can comfortably recommend the book even though I haven't quite finished it. On second thought, I may as well purchase the book as it would certainly merit a future re-read; and it would not be amiss on one's bookshelf as a treasured and worthy possession.

Draws upon contemporary sources
By Midwest Book Review
Yehudi Menuhin is among the finest violinists of the twentieth century. Humphrey Burton's definitive biography of this outstanding musician begins with Yehudi's birth in New York to Russian Jewish immigrants. A prodigiously gifted youth, he gave his first solo recital at the age of eight and within the next five years because internationally acclaimed as a true prodigy of the violin. A visionary individualist quite capable of shocking traditionalists, Yehudi's postwar support for the conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler, and his determination to restore the defeated German nation to the cultural and political reputation that had been so devastated by the Nazi's and anti-semitism brought him into sharp conflict with the Jewish political establishment and displaced persons in Berlin. Still later he spoke out against apartheid in South Africa, Denounced the Soviet Union's oppressive policy toward writers and dissident; and actively support a number of idealistic cultural, social, political, and musical projects. Burton draws upon contemporary sources, unpublished family correspondence, and radio interviews for this richly textured biography, including Yehudi's stormy marriages. Yehudi Menuhin is "must" reading for his legions of fans and students of twentieth century classical music and musicians.

A superb, exhaustive piece of work
By shantinik
This book is a great service to music lovers. It corrects the errors and fills in the lacunae from Menuhin's own masterful "Unfinished Journey". For me, as the father of two musical daughters, it was helpful in providing greater perspective on what Menuhin's precocity looked up from his parents' point of view, and the decisions they made to allow its expression. Exhaustive note, and each chapter contains a list of recommended recordings, so one can follow along in the musical journey if one chooses.

An exciting adventure that had me guessing to the end...
By Heather Sunseri
Though this was the second book in a series, you do not have to have read the A SPY LIKE ME first.

I loved HEART OF AN ASSASSIN. The story was a fun, fast paced, exciting adventure filled with witty and clever characters. Besides, Savvy, Malcolm, and Will, I loved Malcolm and Will's family. They were so funny. And you never knew if the family was going to assassinate Savvy, teach her to become an assassin herself, or welcome her to the family.

Most of all, I enjoyed Savvy. She has a big heart, and despite the fact that she defies her mother and others in her life, she only wants to do what's right while saving those she loves.

If you love reading good mysteries or spy novels with witty characters and a good amount of romance, you'll love this story!!And this series would be the perfect Christmas gift (or whatever occasion) for those teens in your life.

Even Better Than The First
By Emily L Ayers
It doesn't often happen that I like a sequel even better than its predecessor, but this time I did! Savvy has come more into her own this time, a full player in the game instead of a pawn. And oh, the way she plays it turns this particular game on its head! With as many twists and turns as the dark alleys Savvy and Malcolm race down, this story will keep you turning pages until the very end.

I loved the developing relationship between Savvy and her mother, and my biggest complaint was wanting to know what had happened to Savvy's dad! What was he doing (and thinking) while Savvy and her mom were having their adventures? Maybe Laura will indulge my curiosity in a short story one of these days ... Until then, I'll just wait patiently for the next chapter in Savvy's life!

Indian Motorcycle(R): America's First Motorcycle Company(tm) tells the complete story of Indian, America's first mass-produced motorcycle maker, from its start as a bicycle manufacturer to the purchase of the brand by Polaris Industries in 2011 and the subsequent new Indian motorcycles. In the early years of the 20th century, Indian dominated the world's racetracks, earning the brand a worldwide reputation for quality, performance, reliability, and technical innovation, but the once-mighty company fell on hard times and in 1953 was forced to file bankruptcy.

The Indian brand never quite died, though, thanks in large part to fanatically devoted enthusiasts, who tried to resurrect it for over half a century. Finally Polaris, maker of the highly regarded Victory(R) brand of motorcycles, purchased the brand and released the Chief(R) and Scout(R), models that once again restored Indian to its rightful place in the motorcycle pantheon.

Review

"Indian Motorcycle offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of motorcycles and the people who dedicate their lives to designing them, building them, and riding them. Obviously, if you aren't already interested in Indian and its history, this book isn't for you. But for those of us carrying a little fanboyism for the brand, it's an interesting read and I recommend it. Reader beware, however: you will end up desperately wanting an Indian in your garage - RideApart.com

"anyone passionate about the marque will be glued to the pages for hours." - Rider Magazine

"If you’re into Indians, and I know a lot of Throttle Jockey readers are if my emails are any indication, you owe it to yourself to add a copy of this fine book to your collection." - TheManual.com

"Indian Motorcycle, America's First Motorcycle Company reaches back to the turn of the last century to tell the story of Indian's foundation as a bicycle company, its move into motorcycles and its turbulent ups and downs over the years." - Maxim

A real page turner that is way more than pictures. Must read for Motorcyclists.
By Paul S. Brzozowski
The first 65% or so of the book is dedicated to the rise and fall of the original Indian Motocycle company. From the early years where the founders bowed out fairly quickly, to the nefarious owners inbetween, to duPont Brothers efforts to keep it alive and the poor efforts at the end..
Warts and all, good and bad, the effort is outstanding in my mind and just one good read.

The remaining 35% of the book is dedicated to the hop-scotching of the name through some others, including not only the Gilroy bikes and the King's Mountain efforts, but also some underhanded efforts that were not sanctioned, or barely were. All of these were in the end, not complete efforts, although the King's Mountain people seemed to have a good heart for the brand.

Finally, you reach the part of the book where Polaris takes over, and yes, it is a testament to their engineering ability to bring the bike up to modern standards. What would an Indian look like, with fairing and hard bags, since the original nameplate that died in 1953 never had these features? What would the electronics look like? How about redesigning the engine so the "flathead" look is maintained, while still keeping it modern and competitive in today's market?
You cannot make it look like a HD engine, nor can you make it look like a Victory engine. How to capture that old look? They tell their tale.

To me, this is the more important part of the book. Yes, there are purists out there that think the only original Indian is one built 1953 or before. There are people out there that think that no one, absolutely no one, should be able to replicate what the original owners did.
Hogwash...what Polaris has done for this brand is nothing less than outstanding in every effort, and the book reflects that, as does their sales.

As I write this, (August 2016), Harley Davidson has been stagnant or slightly declining in sales for the last 6 quarters, where Indian in the last two quarters especially, has seen growth above 20% per quarter. Learning how they did this is not only interesting in today's market, but is truly a reflection of what an American company can do if they put their mind to it.

With the greatness that the original Indian owners and founders achieved, only to have it tossed and turned by others until it died in the early 50's, Polaris trying to keep the original mindset is maybe one of only a very few companies who could step up, make a strong statement with the brand, and bring it back to life.
This book, in the end, is that story, love it or leave it.
Definitely one that has truly held my interest. More than just crying over grainy photos, this book is a page turner, one that every motorcycle enthusiast should consider reading.

Purists will always be purists, and condemn any effort by any modern company that resurrects, but in my mind, this story, from the original days to the resurrection by Polaris, is nothing short of a crazy good story in the world of motorcycling.
Definitely a must read for any true motorcyclist.

A history of Indian Motorcycle not to miss.
By Skycaptain
Just received this much anticipated book and the wait was worth it. The quality of the design, text, and images are all first class. Darwin Holmstrom has written an in depth history that will be of interest to those of us who own motorcycles and all who wish to know more about America's first motorcycle company.
This book takes you from the start of the company and ends with the current designs by Polaris Industries. That story itself is worth the price of the book, although that section reads more like a company sales brochure.
The one item that bothers me were the photographs of Jerry Hatfield. They lack the top quality of all the other photos and drawings in the book. Just wondering if they are photocopies of the originals. It's surprising that given the sharp images in the rest of the book these photographs were included.
If you like motorcycles or know someone who does I highly recommend this fine book.

If foreign words and phrases are your "bete noire," here is a superb reference that offers coverage of more than 6,000 foreign words and phrases that are in regular use in English today.
Readers will find clear definitions of words such as "fandango," "futon," "falsetto," "basmati," "bistro," "nouvelle cousine"--and many other words appear in everyday speech as well as in musical direction, the arts, food, medicine, science, literature and belles-lettres. As one would expect in a language as global as English, the Dictionary draws words from some forty languages including Afrikaans, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hindustani, Italian, Japanese, Latin, Russian, and Turkish. The entries are browsable, but also authoritative, with detailed information on each word or phrase, including any alternative spellings, the date of the word's introduction into English, its language of origin and original spelling, its definition, and notes on usage and other points of interest. Quotations have been liberally sprinkled throughout to illustrate how the words are used in context. The etymologies are often curious: "ukelele," for instance, is Hawaiian for "jumping flea" and "yakuza," the Japanese word for "gangster," literally means "8-9-3" (the worst possible hand in a popular gambling game). New full-page feature panels provide fascinating extra information on language borrowing, including how specific languages have influenced particular areas of English. This new edition includes up-to-date coverage of words that have entered the English language in the 21st Century, including "bruschetta," "pashmina," and "galactico," and an appendix that lists words by country.
Here then is a book that is "sine qua non" (absolutely indispensable) for anyone's reference shelf.

You too can make those interstices educational ones

Aside from its being in itself a good solid book of great interest, this is ideal for turning to during short waits of indeterminate length--when listening to Vivaldi over the telephone, whilst keeping a close eye on nearly-cooked kasha, or as you wait for the repairman to come back into the house so you can shut the door after him when he does and so preserve at least a flipping modicum of heat in the hallway. No doubt it would be a good way to wean oneself off turning to Escape the Red Giant at such times, but this is only speculation.

As I've said, this is a solid book: It's a well-researched dictionary of foreign words used by English-speakers and not a nonce stocking-stuffer. l've not finished it and am hence reviewing a book I've not read through, but I know how it ends ('zwischenzug') and I feel certain there will be no dramatic twists between `digamma' and a chess move interposed in a sequence of play in such a way as to alter its outcome. Reading it I've learned, usually to my blushes, the true meaning of words whose definition I'd merely guessed or had learned, forgotten, and then confabulated: `Catechumen'--isn't that something to do with resin? ; `caoutchouc'--surely that's chewing gum? And the derivations are for me the most interesting thing in this book: `Chic' (probably) comes from German and `kaput(t)' , whose history is a Freudian treasure-trove of male anxiety, ultimately doesn't.

The entry for `capriccio' begins ' . . . Italian (literally, "head with the hair standing on end" , (hence) horror; later (by association with *capra* goat) sudden start, from *capo* head + *riccio* hedgehog, ultimately from Latin *(h)ericius* urchin)'. If this sort of thing delights you, as it does me, you'd do well to snap this book up. If it doesn't, still it would be worth having to hand as a reference book.

(edit: I've recently come upon Oxford Dictionary of Foreign Words and Phrases (Oxford Paperback Reference) and it's without doubt this book under another title.)
