Indian Motorcycle(R): America's First Motorcycle Company, by Darwin Holmstrom

Indian Motorcycle(R): America's First Motorcycle Company(tm) tells the complete story of Indian, America's first mass-produced motorcycle maker, from its start as a bicycle manufacturer to the purchase of the brand by Polaris Industries in 2011 and the subsequent new Indian motorcycles. In the early years of the 20th century, Indian dominated the world's racetracks, earning the brand a worldwide reputation for quality, performance, reliability, and technical innovation, but the once-mighty company fell on hard times and in 1953 was forced to file bankruptcy.

The Indian brand never quite died, though, thanks in large part to fanatically devoted enthusiasts, who tried to resurrect it for over half a century. Finally Polaris, maker of the highly regarded Victory(R) brand of motorcycles, purchased the brand and released the Chief(R) and Scout(R), models that once again restored Indian to its rightful place in the motorcycle pantheon.

Review

"Indian Motorcycle offers a fascinating glimpse into the world of motorcycles and the people who dedicate their lives to designing them, building them, and riding them. Obviously, if you aren't already interested in Indian and its history, this book isn't for you. But for those of us carrying a little fanboyism for the brand, it's an interesting read and I recommend it. Reader beware, however: you will end up desperately wanting an Indian in your garage - RideApart.com

"anyone passionate about the marque will be glued to the pages for hours." - Rider Magazine

"If you’re into Indians, and I know a lot of Throttle Jockey readers are if my emails are any indication, you owe it to yourself to add a copy of this fine book to your collection." - TheManual.com

"Indian Motorcycle, America's First Motorcycle Company reaches back to the turn of the last century to tell the story of Indian's foundation as a bicycle company, its move into motorcycles and its turbulent ups and downs over the years." - Maxim

A real page turner that is way more than pictures. Must read for Motorcyclists.
By Paul S. Brzozowski
The first 65% or so of the book is dedicated to the rise and fall of the original Indian Motocycle company. From the early years where the founders bowed out fairly quickly, to the nefarious owners inbetween, to duPont Brothers efforts to keep it alive and the poor efforts at the end..
Warts and all, good and bad, the effort is outstanding in my mind and just one good read.

The remaining 35% of the book is dedicated to the hop-scotching of the name through some others, including not only the Gilroy bikes and the King's Mountain efforts, but also some underhanded efforts that were not sanctioned, or barely were. All of these were in the end, not complete efforts, although the King's Mountain people seemed to have a good heart for the brand.

Finally, you reach the part of the book where Polaris takes over, and yes, it is a testament to their engineering ability to bring the bike up to modern standards. What would an Indian look like, with fairing and hard bags, since the original nameplate that died in 1953 never had these features? What would the electronics look like? How about redesigning the engine so the "flathead" look is maintained, while still keeping it modern and competitive in today's market?
You cannot make it look like a HD engine, nor can you make it look like a Victory engine. How to capture that old look? They tell their tale.

To me, this is the more important part of the book. Yes, there are purists out there that think the only original Indian is one built 1953 or before. There are people out there that think that no one, absolutely no one, should be able to replicate what the original owners did.
Hogwash...what Polaris has done for this brand is nothing less than outstanding in every effort, and the book reflects that, as does their sales.

As I write this, (August 2016), Harley Davidson has been stagnant or slightly declining in sales for the last 6 quarters, where Indian in the last two quarters especially, has seen growth above 20% per quarter. Learning how they did this is not only interesting in today's market, but is truly a reflection of what an American company can do if they put their mind to it.

With the greatness that the original Indian owners and founders achieved, only to have it tossed and turned by others until it died in the early 50's, Polaris trying to keep the original mindset is maybe one of only a very few companies who could step up, make a strong statement with the brand, and bring it back to life.
This book, in the end, is that story, love it or leave it.
Definitely one that has truly held my interest. More than just crying over grainy photos, this book is a page turner, one that every motorcycle enthusiast should consider reading.

Purists will always be purists, and condemn any effort by any modern company that resurrects, but in my mind, this story, from the original days to the resurrection by Polaris, is nothing short of a crazy good story in the world of motorcycling.
Definitely a must read for any true motorcyclist.

A history of Indian Motorcycle not to miss.
By Skycaptain
Just received this much anticipated book and the wait was worth it. The quality of the design, text, and images are all first class. Darwin Holmstrom has written an in depth history that will be of interest to those of us who own motorcycles and all who wish to know more about America's first motorcycle company.
This book takes you from the start of the company and ends with the current designs by Polaris Industries. That story itself is worth the price of the book, although that section reads more like a company sales brochure.
The one item that bothers me were the photographs of Jerry Hatfield. They lack the top quality of all the other photos and drawings in the book. Just wondering if they are photocopies of the originals. It's surprising that given the sharp images in the rest of the book these photographs were included.
If you like motorcycles or know someone who does I highly recommend this fine book.
