A hilarious and eye-opening new look at the world around us.
Gross Universe is an eye-opening and sometimes stomach-turning journey of exploration into all of our own gross inner workings, and some of the more nauseating tales from nature and the world around us.
The humor of MAD magazine meets good old hard scientific fact. Always entertaining, in fact downright hilarious, author Jeff Szpirglas takes a scientific look at the many things about our physical selves and the other animals and plants around us that often go unmentioned. From our gross microscopic friends to our skin, hair, sweat, and other malodorous excretions, plus mucus, mold, acne, pus (a Perfectly Understandable Secretion), explosions, fossilized vomit, gas, and myriad other delightful subjects, this is science that will be sure to capture the attention of a young reader.
Szpirglas does not expose the sweeter side of life, but will keep young audiences enraptured, laughing, and learning. It may not always be pretty, but it’s definitely fascinating to uncover the scientific reasons for processes that happen to us and around us.

Grade 3-6–This lively title is for children who love stomach-flipping facts, most of which are connected to the human body. Whether describing the mites that live on dead skin or in the nose and around eyelashes or maggots that clean out pus, the information is presented in a witty manner that is sure to keep readers turning pages to discover more. Additional details are provided by cartoon characters named Scientist A and Scientist B. Puns and wordplays abound as the text reveals tidbits about dandruff (complete with a shiny black "Dandruff Landing Pad"), ear wax, tooth scum, and digestive difficulties that are unsuited for polite conversation. Chapter headings include "Sickening Skin," "Hideous Healing," "House of Wax (and Other Leaky, Oozy Things)," "What a Gas," and "V Is for Vomit." Szpirglas proves that gross facts are cool, and the book may just convince kids who think science is boring to take another look.–Kathryn Kosiorek, Cuyahoga County Public Library, Brooklyn, OH

The book is as informative as it is fun, thanks to OWL magazine alumni Jeff Szpirglas and Michael Cho, who have taken pains never to let raunchiness slip into mere sensationalism. For a book in which exploding fungi is easily the tamest thing discussed, that’s saying something. (Quill & Quire)

Terribly Awesome
By AidaLuka
This book is as described -Gross. It was one of the choices for summer reading project and because of the title- My son selected it. Well, after reading the first few pages, I had to go take a very long, very hot, and very soapy shower. It is full of information about our bodies and the world around us. Everything from tiny mites crawling all over our skin, to the crusty deposits around the eyes in the morning for which there is no scientific name, to (gulp) established guidelines for insect and fragments permitted in foods. This book is a fun and entertaining if not disgusting informational read. I purchased it form the used book division (great more germs, bacteria and mites on every pages) and it was in near new condition. I am very satisfied with this purchase.

Oh Yuck!
By Mike O'Connor
Jeff Szpirglas' book GROSS UNIVERSE is subtitled YOUR GUIDE TO ALL DISGUSTING THINGS UNDER THE SUN. There's just a bit of hyperbole in that but GROSS UNIVERSE is a wonderfully entertaining and educational look at some foul but fascinating facts of life. Published in 2004 by Maple Tree Press, Szpirglas' book is intended for readers 9-12.
Within GROSS UNIVERSE'S 64 pages is the straight skinny on such yuck-inducing items as house dust mites, hairballs, cockroaches, leeches, maggots, boogers and nose-picking, slug slime, ear wax, teardrops and what's in 'em, eye crusties, bad breath and saliva, tapeworms, ticks, botflies, burps and farts, B.O., #1 and #2, vomiting and so on. Talk about a rogue's gallery of grossness!
All that info is - dare I say it? - sweetened by the LOL drawings that accompany the text. Educational, yes; Entertaining, definitely!
Though GROSS UNIVERSE is pitched for readers 9-12, I think readers of all ages will enjoy the book; it's a hoot! And parents might even find it useful when Junior walks up and asks "Daddy, where does poop come from?" or something similarly yucky. Recommended.
